SeatGeek and the secondary ticket market

Deep within co-working space General Assembly, past the front desk, the toilet and the classroom, you think you'd find a store-room. While I'm sure at some point you would, taking your third right leads into a compound of computers, booths and desks. This is where you'll find SeatGeek, what co-founder Russ D'Souza describes as a free "Kayak for tickets." read »

    10 Minutes With Tom Watson

Tom Watson is one of the most popular golfers to ever play the game. The Missouri-born Watson always had a bit of that Huck Finn/Richie Cunningham aw-shucks demeanor about him, especially when he grinned to acknowledge the crowds. And, oh yeah, he was--and still is, at age 61--a helluva golfer. read »

AdVoice: Supply Chain Risk and Charles Darwin

Charles Darwin may have been talking about evolution when he said, "It is not the strongest of the species that survives, nor the most intelligent, but the one most responsive to change." Root Sports Set to Go in Three Baseball Markets

The folks at DirecTV think they've found the formula for revamping the regional sports network. The first test comes in three baseball markets this week. The company, which has continued to air its baseball games in Denver, Seattle and Pittsburgh as FSN (Fox Sports Net) even after splitting from News Corp. three years ago, is rebranding those three regionals as Root Sports. The plan: to extend the ever-increasing interactive experience of the ballpark to the telecast, through more moving cameras,[...] read »

    Yankee Stadium's Parking Woes

The lady behind the counter at my local deli is a huge Yankee fan, the kind who recites stats and picks up on sudden hitches in players' swings as quickly as anyone. She goes to opening day at Yankee Stadium every year, always by car. But she changed her plans this year. read »

Stan Bogdan: Remembering a Fly Fishing Giant

Stanley Bogdan--perhaps the finest reelmaker the world of fly-fishing has ever known--passed away last night at the age of 92. I wrote about Stan and his reels in the 4/13/09 issue of Forbes, as part of a cover package about consumer items that would always be recession-proof. His reels were true functional art. read »

AdVoice: Not NSFW: Dealing with Acronym Addiction

I work in an industry that is addicted to acronyms.  Although acronyms get in the way of clear communication, even my best marketers have the urge to turn every project, every product, and every position into an acronym.  We used to have an internal portal page that explained popular acronyms but the authors stopped updating the page a few years ago when it became a full-time job. It was TMW. read »
