• Twitter now available in Russian and Turkish

    Tuesday, April 26, 2011

Starting today, you’ll be able to use Twitter in Russian and Turkish. We added these two languages to our Translation Center about two months ago. Thanks to the fast, high-quality work of our translators, both languages are now available on twitter.com and mobile.twitter.com.

You can change your language from the settings page on twitter.com. Once you set your language to Russian or Turkish, you will be able to browse your interests and find interesting Russian and Turkish accounts to follow. Here are a few suggestions to get you started:

    Russia
    • @evgeniplushenko - Evgeny Plushenko, figure skater
    • @VRSoloviev - Vladimir Soloviev, journalist
    • @tina_kandelaki - Tina Kandelaki, journalist and TV host
    • @MedvedevRussia - President of the Russian Federation
    • @urgantcom - Ivan Urgant, TV host and comedian

    Turkey

    • @niltakipte - Nil Karaibrahimgil, singer

For those of you who have an Android device, Twitter for Android is available in Russian and Turkish. We’re working to support these languages in our other mobile applications in the future. We’ve also translated SMS commands and replies into Turkish; Twitter SMS is currently available with Vodafone in Turkey (shortcode is 2444).
  • The Tweets of San Francisco

    Friday, April 22, 2011

The city where we have started and grown will remain our future home. Twitter is staying in San Francisco and has signed a lease to move our headquarters to Market Square, a historic building in San Francisco’s Central Market neighborhood that is being managed by our new partner and landlord, Shorenstein Properties.

We would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to Mayor Ed Lee; the San Francisco Board of Supervisors (in particular Supervisor Jane Kim and Supervisor David Chiu); Jennifer Matz and Amy Cohen from the city’s Office of Economic and Workforce Development; Charlie Malet from Shorenstein Properties; and, everyone who worked with them for their vision, effort and perseverance in spearheading legislation that will help revitalize an area of San Francisco where office space has sat vacant for decades.

We are proud that Twitter will be among the first companies moving into the Central Market area and will be playing a role in its renewal with the city and with other businesses, arts organizations, and the numerous community organizations that have been doing hard work in the neighborhood for many years.

San Francisco’s unique creativity and inventiveness is a part of Twitter’s DNA, and we feel like we are part of San Francisco. Three-quarters of our employees who live in San Francisco are involved in causes and charities in the city. Our employees are excited to be active members of our future neighborhood as volunteers, customers, diners and patrons of the arts.

We don’t yet have a timeline for our relocation, but we expect we will move into our new space in mid-2012. We can’t wait.
  • Following @Portugaltheman: Musical Antics

    Wednesday, April 20, 2011

In the past, getting close to your favorite musicians required a backstage pass at a crowded venue. Now you can just follow their Tweets to feel like you're right there with them. One example: experimental rock band @Portugaltheman, which like label-mates @Chromeo, @JayZ and @Paramore, uses Twitter to connect with fans and follow their own personal interests (the Alaskan Iditarod... who knew?).

Following bands can also get you access to secret shows and cool contests. For example, @Portugaltheman is selecting two followers each day for the next seven days to win a pair of tickets to one of their 26 upcoming shows. If you Tweet about this video and follow their account, you may get lucky!

So, what to do now? Follow your local music venues, favorite bands, and scan the Music list in our "Browse Interests" section for tons of top-rated music accounts. Here are some more helpful resources:

--@Amazonmp3 tweets daily deals on digital downloads.
--@LiveNation shares tickets to hot shows so you can snatch one before they sell out.
--@AllSongs, @Stereogum and @Pitchforkmedia share album reviews and news about new bands.

    Have fun!

Not much talk about this but #Kings were a bounce away from being up 2-0 on #Sharks. Looked dominant in game 2 even w/out Stoll. #SJSLAKless than a minute ago via Twitter for BlackBerry® Favorite Retweet Reply

The @NHL is using Twitter to immerse fans in the journey to Lord Stanley’s Cup both on and off the ice throughout the playoffs. Indeed, following playoff hashtags on Twitter is like listening to a radio announcer while simultaneously hearing from passionate fans during the game.

The @NHL has built lists for the teams, players, and has even deemed some fans official by adding the most enthusiastic ones to a team fan list like this one, which follows nearly 70 Coyote devotees. As Tweets fly from the rink, you can sit back and watch the stream from wherever you happen to be, and get the scoop on important calls or moments as they happen.

Here are some resources to get you closer to the action:

  • Trends - now in 70 more locations

    Monday, April 11, 2011

We first launched Trends as a useful way for people to find out what topics are being talked about around the world, right now. Early last year, we added Local Trends to make it easier to find more locally relevant topics in specific countries and metropolitan locations. Today, we’re adding Trends for more than 70 new cities and countries - bringing the total number of locations to more than 100.

You can browse these new locations by clicking “change” in the Trends sidebar on twitter.com. You’ll see and be able to select among a wide array of cities and countries, including Santiago, Jakarta, Kuala Lumpur, South Africa, Japan and many more. And, of course, you still have the option to see worldwide Trends.

If you’ve got questions or would like help, please check out our support article on Trends.
  • Following @NASA: Learn the moonwalk

    Thursday, April 07, 2011

Using various Twitter accounts, NASA is giving the world easy-access to their once-exclusive world, offering a look into the science, discovery and everyday life at an agency established in 1958–before most people even had color televisions. (Can you imagine?)

By following NASA and its astronauts on Twitter, you can win tickets to spaceshuttle Tweetups (there happens to be one planned for the launch this month), learn about the latest discoveries, and ask them inquisitive questions like, “why is that funny dance move called the moonwalk?”

Follow @NASA and check out these related accounts you may also find interesting:

  • Discover new accounts and search like a pro

    Monday, April 04, 2011

We’ve made it easier to find and follow Twitter accounts based on your interests. When you search for a topic, you can now discover accounts that are relevant to that particular subject. (Previously, you would have seen accounts that have the specific term in their name or username. ) Just click on the “people” section of the search results page or search from the “Who to follow” page.

This new approach helps you find the Twitter users that will best help you follow your interests. For example, if you’re interested in hip hop, chances are that you’d like to follow hip hop artists. Searching for “hip hop” now surfaces accounts like @common and @questlove. (Previously, we typically showed accounts that have “hip hop” in the name.)

Whether you’re an aspiring cupcake baker, a crafty person looking for new DIY projects or someone who likes to keep an eye out for a great travel deal, you’ll be able to quickly find and connect with useful accounts. You can search for general topics, like funny or sports, or be more specific – try Manchester United, Nascar or Formula One.

One more thing! Now, when you search on Twitter.com, you’ll see a tip from Twitter. This tip points you to a set of search operators and our advanced search page, which help you more quickly find what you’re looking for.
  • So a bar walks into an app...

    Thursday, March 31, 2011

Last month, we released an update to Twitter for iPhone and iPad containing a number of features that made finding friends and sharing information on Twitter even easier. The iPhone app also contained a new feature we wanted to test named the QuickBar. The QuickBar was originally conceived to help users discover what’s happening in the broader world beyond people they already follow. The bar was also seen as a potential means of in-app notifications for new @mentions, DMs, and other important activity.

We want Twitter to instantly connect people everywhere to what’s most meaningful to them. In support of this, we will frequently experiment by trying new things, adding new features, and being bold in the product decisions we make. After testing a feature and evaluating its merits, if we learn it doesn’t improve the user experience or serve our mission, we’ll remove that feature.

Rather than continue to make changes to the QuickBar as it exists, we removed the bar from the update appearing in the App Store today. We believe there are still significant benefits to increasing awareness of what’s happening outside the home timeline. Evidence of the incredibly high usage metrics for the QuickBar support this. For now, we’re going back to the drawing board to explore the best possible experience for in-app notification and discovery.
  • Happy Birthday Twitter!

    Monday, March 21, 2011

It's easy to remember working with @jack, @ev, and our tiny team on a project we called Twitter like it was last week. Amazingly, it's five years ago today that the first tweet was sent. Over these years, Twitter has matured and made an impact in the areas of social responsibility, politics, sports, media, and more. The people who use Twitter have made it what it is today, and on our fifth birthday, it's the people that make Twitter special who we are celebrating.

There are now more than 400 full time employees working at Twitter. In the last year alone we have made huge progress towards stability and performance. This work sets us up to continue innovating but it also allows us to build a profitable business on a strong foundation. We are in a position now which allows us to continue serving and delighting everyone who relies on Twitter to connect them to that which is meaningful for another five years and beyond.

Twitter users now send more than 140 million Tweets a day which adds up to a billion Tweets every 8 days—by comparison, it took 3 years, 2 months, and 1 day to reach the first billion Tweets. While it took about 18 months to sign up the first 500,000 accounts, we now see close to 500,000 accounts created every day. All of this momentum and growth often pales in comparison to a single compassionate Tweet by a caring person who wants to help someone in need.

The people who use Twitter make it special because for any interest we might have, somebody is tweeting about it. We're lucky to have so many people using Twitter in so many interesting and important ways. This month, I celebrated my own birthday. It's a gift to be able to work with some of the most talented, thoughtful, and smart people I've ever known. It's because of them that my life has been made better. Happy Birthday, Twitter—and thank you.
