President Obama Townhall in Virginia: From Earlier
President Obama began the first of a three-day tour touting his plan to reduce the deficit. This morning, he spoke at the Northern Virginia Community College-Annandale.
At his event titled "Shared Responsibility and Shared Prosperity," the president highlighted his proposal to cut $4 trillion from the budget in the next 12 years.
The Washington Journal continued its week-long special coverage of the budget debate. The Journal is focusing on a deficit-reducing proposal released by the bi-partisan fiscal commission last December. Marilyn Sarafini with Kaiser Health News appeared on today's program to discuss the commission's Medicare and Medicaid proposals. More »

The Future of Deepwater Energy Drilling Examined

April 20 marks the one year anniversary of the explosion of the Deepwater Horizon oil rig, which killed 11 workers and caused nearly 5 billion gallons of oil to leak into the Gulf of Mexico.
Today, Michael Bromwich, the man leading the effort to reform federal oversight of offshore drilling, addressed these challenges in his keynote speech at today’s conference on the future of offshore oil and natural gas development, hosted by CSIS. He said the goal will to drastically increase drilling safety and diminish the risks of a major blowout.

The Department of Defense held a press briefing on the relocation of Wikileaks suspect Pfc. Bradley Manning from a Marine Corps prison in Quantico, Virginia, to Fort Leavenworth, in Kansas. An intelligence analyst, Pfc. Manning is accusing of releasing sensitive State Department cables to Wikileaks, a whistle-blower website.

NASA Briefing on Next Shuttle Launch

NASA scientists participated in a press conference on the next Space Shuttle Mission. NASA’s second-to-last shuttle mission is scheduled for April 29th. Shuttle Endeavor will deliver spare parts and a piece of equipment called the Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer to the International Space Station. The final shuttle mission is scheduled for June of this year.

State Department Press Briefing

CSIS Discussion on the Future of Offshore Oil Drilling

The Center for Strategic and International Studies held a discussion on the future of offshore exploration and drilling of oil and natural gas. Opening remarks came from the director of the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management Michael Bromwich. Other speakers include Department of Energy official Christopher Smith and Charlie Williams, the chief scientist for Shell Oil. They spoke about the future of these industries in the wake of the Deepwater Horizon explosion which occurred last April. Recently, the Ocean Energy Safety Advisory Committee held its first public meeting to discuss its agenda, and to hear about the findings and recommendations of the recent investigation of last year’s BP Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill.
