For those who like playing Oscar pools, DGA nominations tend to be a good harbinger for the actual Oscar nominations. So it’s worth noting what made the cut: Michel Hazanavicius‘s The Artist, Woody Allen‘s Midnight in Paris, Martin Scorsese‘s Hugo, Alexander Payne‘s The Descendants, and David Fincher‘s The Girl With Dragon Tattoo all got nominated today.

The Artist is gaining steam to be the picture to beat this year at the Oscars, and just today its director Michel Hazanavicius was nominated for the DGA’s best director award. The film has not had many detractors, but there was a shot across the bow today when Kim Novak – star of Alfred Hitchcock’s Vertigo – complained about the use of music from Vertigo in the film. Tim Burton certainly is on a remake/adaptation tear lately—the Beetlejuice and Edward Scissorhands director knocked out a Charlie and the Chocolate Factory adaptation in 2005, a Sweeny Todd adaptation in 2007, and an Alice in Wonderland remake in 2010, as well as currently filming a Dark Shadows update with Johnny Depp, and is set to helm an adaptation of Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter, along with a remake of his very own Frankenweenie. And now, news has broke that Burton has his eye on a live-action version of Pinocchio starring Robert Downey Jr.

The Devil Inside debuted at the top during 2012′s first weekend, and so far, the box office is off to a great start. This is a good sign. The low-budget fright film made an outstanding debut of $34.5 million – that’s a lot more than last year’s Season of the Witch. Tom Cruise‘s Mission Impossible Ghost Protocol might’ve slipped to No. 2, but Paramount is still the big winner. The Devil Inside might not be a hit with critics, but it’s a record breaker. The film now holds the title as the biggest opening ever for the first weekend of the year. As for the action sequel, it might no longer be No. 1, but over the weekend Cruise’s latest reached a total of $170.2 million. Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows followed with $14 million; The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo came in at No. 4 with $11.3 million; and Alvin and the Chipmunks rounded out the top 5 with $9.5 million.

This time, he’s swearing that it’s happening in April.

For those who’ve been following The Dark Knight Rises and the Bane controversy, there’s been back and forth recently about changing audio to make Tom Hardy‘s character slightly more understandable. Some said the audio was remixed, while recently the studio has said nothing was touched. Until the film comes out, it’s likely this will be a big question about the film. Thankfully Conan O’Brien is on top of it and has exposed the problem.
