One of the most popular stops during MSI's Open House on Friday was the touch-tank and other exhibits from the REEF (Research Experience and Education Facility). The MSI educational outreach program draws thousands of k-12 students annually and is staffed by UCSB undergraduate interns at its home at Campus Point.

First MSI Director Bob Holmes joined the crowd for the BBQ at Goleta Beach on Saturday of the 40th Anniversary Weekend. Dr. Holmes served as director from 1969-1974. Appearing at Friday's Reception following the Open House, MSI Director Steve Gaines (center) presented Chancellor Henry Yang with a new MSI hat which he wore proudly! Vice Chancellor Michael Witherell was also given a hat. All three leaders spoke to the guests about the exponential growth of MSI since its origins in 1969 and about the plans for the future that include its partnership with the Channel Islands National Marine Sanctuary.
