Coast Guard interdicts, repatriates 28 Haitian migrants

MIAMI - Crewmembers from the Coast Guard Cutter Thetis repatriated 28 Haitian migrants to Cap Haitien, Haiti, Friday.

Watchstanders at the District 7 Command Center in Miami received a report Sunday of a 30-foot vessel taking of water 35 miles east of North Miami Beach, Fla. An HU-25 Falcon aircraft crew was launched from Coast Guard Air Station Miami and the cutter Chandeleur was diverted to respond to the distressed vessel. The crew of Chandeluer arrived on scene and safely embarked 28 Haitian migrants. The vessel subsequently sank.

Once aboard Coast Guard cutters, all migrants receive food, water, shelter and necessary medical attention.

The Coast Guard has interdicted 583 Haitian migrants since Oct. 1, 2009.

The Chandeleur is a 110-foot patrol boat homeported in Miami.

The Thetis is a 270-foot medium endurance cutter homported in Key West, Fla.
