Obama Administration Has Provided $8.7 Billion for Transit Vehicles, Infrastructure, Preventive Maintenance

Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood announced today that the Choctaw Nation of Oklahoma has received the 1,000th grant for transit awarded under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA).

The Choctaw Nation will use the $480,374 grant for vehicle and technology upgrades.  The non-reservation tribe provides transportation services for all the residents of a 10½-county area of southeast Oklahoma where many members of the tribe live.

On October 28, Indian Affairs signed a contract for approximately $39 million in ARRA funds for the replacement of the Crow Creek Tribal School in South Dakota.  The school, which is one of 183 schools within the BIE system, serves approximately 400 academic and 100 residential American Indian children in grades K-12.  It is a design-build school with design work completed during the winter months and construction beginning in May 2010 with completion scheduled for December 2011.

WASHINGTON -- The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the U.S. Department of Health and Human Service's (HHS) Indian Health Service (IHS) today announced $90 million in funds from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 for improved access to vital drinking water and wastewater services in the American Indian and Alaska Native communities. The funds will be invested in 'shovel ready' infrastructure projects designed to better protect human and environmental health in Indian Country and to create jobs.

Washington, DC - As part of an effort to highlight the local impact of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (Recovery Act) investments, Treasury's Community Development Financial Institutions (CDFI) Fund Director Donna J. Gambrell will travel to Kyle, South Dakota to announce $8 million in financial assistance awards for Native CDFIs committed to serving economically distressed Native American, Alaska Native, and Native Hawaiian Communities across the nation.

Job Creation, Construction and Infrastructure Improvements, Workforce Development Focus of Tribal Community Investments

BISMARK, N.D. - Secretary of the Interior Ken Salazar today announced that the Department will fund $500 million in new school and housing construction, road and bridge improvements, and workforce development projects for federally recognized tribes across the nation. Under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009, the Department's Indian Affairs office will also offer federally guaranteed loans for American Indian-owned businesses. These investments will significantly improve the quality of life in tribal communities nationwide. Overall, Interior will invest more than $3 billion through President Obama's economic recovery plan.

More than $248 Million Made Available to Tribes for Criminal Justice Needs

WASHINGTON - Associate Attorney General Thomas J. Perrelli announced today that more than $248 million is available for Tribes to assist with addressing the Indian Country's criminal justice needs. These funds are part of $4 billion in American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (Recovery Act) funds managed by the Justice Department to assist tribal, state, and local law enforcement and for other criminal justice activities that help to prevent crime and improve the criminal and juvenile justice systems in the United States, while supporting the creation of jobs and providing much needed resources for states and local communities.
