Just before Cyndi Campbell left for vacation to the Wisconsin Dells last
month, she dropped off her little dog Tootsie at the vet. The trip was great -- until Campbell's cell phone rang the last night.
She recognized the number of Minooka Animal Hospital and picked it up. "She said Tootsie had been attacked by a pit bull and she died," said Campbell.

A former Chicago Police detective who allegedly witnessed former Cmdr. Jon Burge play "Russian roulette" with a suspect and put a typewriter cover over the man's head is expected to be a key prosecution witness in Burge's upcoming trial, the Chicago Sun-Times has learned. Michael McDermott, considered part of Burge's inner circle and accused of torturing suspects himself, was forced by a judge to break the blue wall of silence and testify.

Dressed in a black suit, tie, and blue shirt, former Chicago Police Cmdr. Jon Burge on Thursday spun around in his chair and seemed to struggle a bit as he stood up.
"Morning, ladies and gentlemen," said the man who for decades has been accused of torturing murder suspects.
Burge was briefly inside a courtroom addressing the potential jurors who will judge his fate in his trial that starts later this month on obstruction of justice and perjury charges.

With her alleged bat-wielding mugger and an accomplice in police custody Tuesday, Stacy Jurich pulled the intravenous tube from her arm and stumbled to the bedside of her friend Natasha McShane -- the Irish exchange student who got the worst of the bloody attack last week in Bucktown. Jurich hunched over her friend's hospital bed weeping, saying, "Come back. I need you to dance with me. I love you and I'm sorry and I'll do everything I can for you," Jurich's mother said Tuesday.

Women struck with bat and robbed in Bucktown
They were two young women out on the town and celebrating success. One was 24-year-old Stacy Jurich, a recent college grad who earned a glowing work review. The other was Natasha McShane, 23, an exchange student from Ireland attending the University of Illinois at Chicago.
At about 3:30 a.m. this morning, they were walking to Jurich’s Bucktown
home from a bar in Wicker Park when the night turned ugly. A robber attacked them with an aluminum baseball bat near railroad
tracks in the 1800 block of North Damen.

Two witnesses who say they drove over the railroad tracks seconds before a train struck and killed a popular dance instructor say the crossing’s signal lights weren’t working and that the gate did not come down until the train had almost passed. One witness — a Cook County prosecutor — said she herself barely dodged being hit. “The lights and the gate did not work,” prosecutor Lauren Brown said Saturday. “It was horrible. . . . I did not know that train was there till it was up on me.”

Yet another wave of shootings swept across Chicago on Thursday night and
Friday morning, leaving seven people dead and 15 wounded. The carnage pushed the city's murder toll to 97 so far this year, up
from 81 by this date last year. This latest round of bloodshed was not as extensive as that two weeks
ago, when 41 people were shot and four killed.
