Foreign languages face cuts at 27 Chicago schools: CPS Elementary-age kids would no longer have a chance to learn a foreign language at their neighborhood public school under a decision to dump "world languages" to save $3.5 million, Chicago Public School officials revealed Tuesday. The move to ax languages such as Spanish, Japanese, French, Italian and Latin affects 25 neighborhood elementary schools that offer magnet programs in "world languages,'' as well as Juarez and Roosevelt high schools, officials said.

DeWyze band far from idle The spotlight from "American Idol" casts a long shadow. Shining in this coast-to-coast mist is the group once known as the Lee DeWyze Band. The band used to back the "Idol" finalist from Mount Prospect, and its members have a colorful pedigree: Guitarist Louis Svitek was in the popular industrial metal band Ministry and the thrash band M.O.D. He also co-owns the independent WuLi Records in Chicago, for which DeWyze, 23, recorded two albums.
