Love triangle suspected in Riverside triple slaying

A man believed to have shot and killed two people inside an upscale Riverside neighborhood was the ex-boyfriend of one of the victims, a neighbor said Wednesday.

The alleged shooter had dated the woman, whose new boyfriend was in the process of moving in when he also was shot, said Melissa Kawile, 18.

Kawile said the alleged shooter, who was later killed by a police officer, lived across the street from his ex-girlfriend.

“Her new boyfriend was moving in,” Kawile said. “Right now, there’s still a moving truck there with all his stuff in it.”

The shooting occurred about 6 p.m. Tuesday in the 11500 block of Trailway Drive. The suspected gunman was shot dead as the first officer arrived on the scene.

The bodies of another man and a woman were found in the front yard and by the curb of a home inside the gated community. Authorities said they believed the three knew each other.

No charges filed against L.A. union leader accused of stealing laptop

Los Angeles County Dist. Atty. Steve Cooley has declined to file criminal charges against a union leader accused by his former bosses of stealing a laptop computer, authorities said Wednesday.

Police arrested Josif Kahraman, former executive director of the Engineers and Architects Assn., and his wife, Ani Kahraman, last week on suspicion of felony grand theft.

He was arrested the same day he was placed on leave from his job.

The case was dropped because the union was "not cooperative with investigators," said Jane Robison, a spokeswoman for the district attorney's office.

Kahraman, 51, had overseen the union's day-to-day operations and served as its chief labor negotiator.

His wife was an administrative volunteer with the organization, which represents city workers. The district attorney's office also declined to file charges against her, Robison said.

Kahraman's attorney, Lara Yeretsian, could not be reached for comment but said last week her client was not guilty and had no intention of depriving the union of its laptop.

The announcement comes amid continuing turmoil within the union, which has accused three of its governors of misconduct and put two of its labor representatives on leave.

Tujunga man arrested for allegedly shooting cousin to death while driving on freeway

A Tujunga man was in custody Wednesday for allegedly shooting and killing his cousin while driving on the 210 Freeway in La Crescenta, authorities said.

The body of the victim, 33-year-old Adine Arzumanyan, was pushed out of the car and left on the freeway after last month's shooting, said officials with the L.A. County Sheriff's Department.

Her cousin, Aram Sarukhanyan, 27, allegedly drove on but was stopped by authorities a short time later, suffering from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound, officials said.

Sarukhanyan was arrested on suspicion of murder Tuesday after his release from the hospital.

Information on a possible motive was not immediately available. The investigation is ongoing.

Newport Beach approves crackdown on unruly parties: 'We're not going to allow this to be a party town'

The Newport Beach City Council on Tuesday passed an ordinance that will impose fines on partygoers, renters and landlords who contribute to or allow excessively rowdy parties.

But the council changed one aspect of the law: instead of stipulating that a bright red placard be posted on the door of a violating house for six months, the ordinance requires a black-and-white notice that would stay up for three months.

The council  also reduced the maximum fine from $8,000 to $3,000. Under the law, if officers observe a party with eight people or more, where people are urinating in public, are drunk in public, are excessively noisy, serve alcohol to minors or display other behaviors, they will be able to post a notice on the door and issue violations.

"We're changing the culture here. We're not going to allow this to be a party town," said police Chief Jay Johnson.

A number of landlords spoke at the meeting and said they were concerned that the law would affect their property values. "It leaves way too much discretion in the individual officers' hands ... if [a home] gets a scarlet letter or not," said Corona del Mar real estate agent Mark Simon.

Alleged drunk driver crashes into Compton house

A man who allegedly drove into an occupied house in Compton was arrested with the help of neighborhood residents who chased after him when he fled the scene, authorities said Wednesday.

The driver was drunk when he lost control of his vehicle about 10:25 p.m. Tuesday and crashed into two parked cars and then into a home in the 13000 block of Aranbe Avenue, said Sgt. Joe Riordan of the California Highway Patrol.

The man and his passenger ran from the scene but were followed by residents and then taken into custody by responding officers, Riordan said.

The driver, whose name was not immediately available, was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence and hit and run.

No one was hurt in the crash.

Slaying of MTV coordinator may be linked to shotgun robberies, LAPD says

Ben Los Angeles police are trying to determine whether there is link between Sunday's slaying of MTV music coordinator Gabriel Aron Ben-Meir and a series of shotgun robberies and a homicide over the last two weeks.

LAPD sources said the robber had struck at least eight times in the last two weeks, using a shotgun during street and business robberies in the Mid-City, Southwest L.A. and Wilshire areas. The robber also is responsible for a slaying a week ago, police believe.

The sources, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, stressed that detectives had not made a positive link but considered it a solid lead. A division of the LAPD was on tactical alert Tuesday night looking for the robbery suspect.

The MTV music coordinator was shot execution-style outside his mid-Wilshire apartment, apparently with a shotgun.

Because of the time of the attack, no witnesses have been found, according to the sources. Police are considering a variety of possible scenarios, including a street robbery or an attack by someone he knew.

The killing of Ben-Meir stunned family members, co-workers at the music network and residents in a neighborhood lined with palm trees and manicured lawns not far from the Miracle Mile.

"We are all in terrible shock and would appreciate anyone with any information regarding his final hours to come forward," Ben-Meir's sister Alexis said Monday evening in an email.

Ben-Meir had parked his BMW on the street and was just a few steps from his front door when he was shot on Packard Street between Stanley and Spaulding avenues, according to the Los Angeles Police Department. Investigators did not say if he had been robbed.

A neighbor walking his dog about 6:30 a.m. Sunday came across Ben-Meir's body and alerted police. The victim was face down in a pool of blood, law enforcement sources said, and had been shot at least once in the back of the head.

Neighbors interviewed by detectives reported hearing what sounded like a single shot about 1 a.m. but said they did not report it to police.

On Monday afternoon, a bouquet of flowers left by a neighbor marked the spot where Ben-Meir was killed.

A Los Angeles native, Ben-Meir came from an entertainment-industry family. His father, Nick, is an entertainment accountant, and his sister Alexis manages musicians.

He attended the Seeds laboratory school at UCLA and the Windward School in West Los Angeles for junior and senior high school students, then went on to Kenyon College in Ohio, where he played tennis and graduated with a degree in music and physics, his family said.

Ben-Meir was credited as a musical coordinator or post-production coordinator on several MTV shows, including the "Top Pop Group," which featured amateur bands competing to be crowned America's best pop group.

Authorities believe one person committed suicide after shooting the other two, though an investigation was ongoing. It was unclear if the three were students or what the motive may have been.

Lindsay Lohan could end necklace-theft case today

Actress Lindsay Lohan appears at the Beverly Hills Municipal Courthouse on July 20, 2010.

The legal drama over Lindsay Lohan and the necklace she is accused of stealing from a Venice jewelry store could come to an end on Wednesday.

Lohan's lawyer is expected to enter a no-contest plea on her behalf to a misdemeanor theft charge. It's unclear whether Lohan will be in court, which is not required for such a plea.

It's also unclear whether the plea would mean any jail time for the actress.

If the plea is entered, probation officers will prepare a sentencing report recommending that Lohan either serve time in a county jail or serve the sentence at home with electric monitoring at her own expense.

"The judge has the power to order no electronic monitoring, but the reality is she is going to serve very little jail time –- something like 14 days or perhaps even electronic monitoring," said Dmitry Gorin, a defense attorney and former prosecutor. "In this case, she is going to serve lot less time because it is a misdemeanor, not a felony."

Schwarzenegger says he talked to Maria Shriver; 'We love each other very much'

Separation

Former Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger said he and his wife Maria Shriver are "taking it one day at a time" after they announced their separation Monday.

"I just talked to Maria an hour ago before I came here and we both were saying the same thing, we are amazed and extremely blessed to be surrounded by so many wonderful people," he said Tuesday night at a speech during the 63rd Israel Independence Day Celebration at Los Angeles' Skirball Cultural Center.

In his first statement since the separation was announced, he said they were grateful for their family.

"We both love each other very much, we are very fortunate we have four extraordinary children and we're taking it one day at a time," he said.

Some people close to Shriver said she was dealing with the loss of her parents and her transition from California's first lady back into private life.

The friends, who spoke to The Times on the condition of anonymity, said the separation was a long time in coming.
