TCEQ fines Sanger gas station

08:42 AM CST on Thursday, March 11, 2010

By Peggy Heinkel-Wolfe / Staff Writer

State environmental officials approved an agreed order Wednesday fining a Sanger convenience store $3,460 for problems related to its gas tanks.

According to state records, a customer called the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality on July 15 complaining that gas they’d bought at Horizon, located at 901 N. Stemmons St., contained water and debris.

Owner and operator Arish Khan said he told the state inspector he’d already had someone out to take care of the problem, which was related to the rain. But that wasn’t enough to satisfy the inspector, he said.

The store was cited for three violations, including failing to maintain the vapor recovery and sump systems and failing to provide the monitoring paperwork for the underground storage tanks. However, the store was also given credit for being a high performer, with good compliance overall, and $681 of the fine was deferred.

In all, TCEQ approved penalties totaling $574,186 against 69 regulated entities for violations of state environmental regulations Wednesday.
