• Bryant fits the stripes

3/10/10: Antonio Bryant fits right in, doesn’t he? Fits right into the specifications that built the Bengals 2009 AFC North champions. A corps of players who overcome problems on and off the field and eager to prove themselves to the people that gave up o

  • Tank finds refuge

3/9/10: Tank Johnson agreed to more than a four-year deal Monday. The Bengals gave their starting tackle an exclamation point to cap off his comeback story. A story that began in the depths with a five-year plan.

  • Ballroom scouting

3/8/10: While the Bengals scout the NFL for wide receiver Chad Ochocinco’s running mate for next season, here is a scouting report from The Ocho’s dance partner. “He’s determined. He’s competitive. He reminds me of Emmitt,” says Cheryl Burke of...

Q (3/2/10): Most scouts are saying there is more good player depth at the defensive line position than there has been in a long time. I hope the Bengals don't reach with their first round pick for a need (TE or WR) rather than taking the best player available.

A: You make a great point. After hearing people talk about the defensive talent of this draft at the NFL scouting combine along with the injuries of tight ends Jermaine Gresham and Rob Gronkowski, and the anonymous field of wide receivers after Dez Bryant, the odds aren’t so long that the Bengals go defense in the first round for the fifth time in head coach Marvin Lewis’ eight seasons. "I think the Bengals will not use many (if at all) 5 WR sets this year. I don't see that being a common formation for them. I think they will use the TE more & go with 3 or 4 wide, or spit out a RB depending on down & distance, field position, etc. Could they draft a guy, or use Simpson as the 6th WR? Yes, but Simpson doesn't play ST, which means Simpson would have to beat out Matt Jones (cut) or Caldwell (back to ST only). A rookie WR would have to play ST in order to be active on game day, OR someone has to get cut. I don't see them using a #1 or #2 draft pick for that. It would be a lot of $ tied up at the WR position & unless the guy beats out Jones or Caldwell, he won't play much."
