Fellowships

  • Kroc Fellowships
    Kroc Fellowships were established to identify and develop a new generation of extraordinary journalists for the public radio system.
  • The Stone & Holt Weeks Fellowship
    Designed to give a promising individual the opportunity to launch a career in journalism, the fellowship consists of two sessions: 12 weeks at The Washington Post followed by 12 weeks at NPR in Washington, to learn how to report for print, web and radio.
  • Above the Fray Fellowship
    NPR and the John Alexander Project have collaborated to launch the Above the Fray Fellowship, a joint international reporting fellowship designed to give a promising journalist the opportunity to cover important but under-reported stories from a location abroad.

NPR Employee Benefits

  • Our cafeteria-style benefits program allows employees to customize benefits. NPR offers three medical plans; two dental plans; a vision-care plan; supplemental life insurance; and other optional items. In addition, all employees receive term life insurance and long-term disability.
  • New employees accrue 3 weeks of annual leave per year. Leave accrual increases in increments with the maximum being six weeks at the beginning of 17 years of continuous service. In addition, employees receive personal and bereavement leave, and accrue 10 days of sick leave each year. NPR generally has 10 paid holidays per year. However, in fiscal 2010, from October 1, 2009 to September 30, 2010, NPR will have 7 paid holidays.
  • NPR offers a retirement savings plan called a 403(b) plan. New employees are welcome to begin contributing towards their retirement immediately. After two years of employment, NPR starts making contributions based on a percentage of your employee earnings as specified in our Plan document. All retirement funds are vested immediately.
  • Additional benefits include direct deposit, a credit union, free checking at two local banks with direct deposit, an employee-assistance program, other voluntary insurance options, flexible spending accounts and a leave sharing program.
