Sort of has a diner feel, with shiny tables, barstools and a Mel's Diner-like window where you can watch the cooks prepare your meal and the servers pick it up. You half expect the cooks to yell, "pickup!"

Great story. Sometimes I take photos of new places - and their dishes -to show off to my Facebook friends that I went to some new restaurant. I also take pictures of the waitresses at Jake's - but that's for a different web site! :)

Nice to see Longoria's BBQ in Everman got a plug in his story; great sausage there. Some of the other places he included, however, are not very good, and it seemed like he was including them simply because they had not been written about before. He even wrote that himself, something along the lines of "this BBQ joint has not been written about before," or somesuch. Seems like it's one of those stories written not to inform people but to rile them up, get them talking about the story; lord knows D magazine needs some people to talk about it these days.

Ick. That's a horrendous restaurant. Some of the worst Tex Mex around here, worse than Uncle Julio's, actually. At least Uncle Julio's has one redeeming quality: freshly made tortillas. Can't think of one reason to go back to Cantina Laredo - no, not even their free queso.

La Madeleine in Fort Worth's Sundance Square to shut down on Sunday January 17
Good riddance to that filthy place. It wasn't that long ago when the health department gave them a very low score. I found hair in my food on two occasions and, on another occasion (guess I just didn't learn the first two times), one of the employees had her finger stuck in her mouth - while, with the other hand, she served soup; it was disgusting. Her manager was standing right there; he didn't say a word. Every other La Mad's I've visited has been fine, including the Camp Bowie location.

The mere fact that they're offering Jill Johnson, the Star-T's best photographer, a buyout proves that A) no one there cares one bit about the quality of the paper anymore and B) those in charge of making these who-goes/who-stays decisions have completely lost their minds.

Loverboy was -- and still is -- a terrific band. I saw them a coupla years ago at Smirnoff and they were great. Mike's vocals have held up well - he can still pull off that looooooong screech in "Turn Me Loose."

Dallas-based 7-Eleven offers behind-the-scenes tour to few media outlets
When I was a kid, the only "food" you could get at 7-Eleven was a hot dog. Now, I eat there at least two/three times a week. There's a great one near downtown Fort Worth that carries some terrific and imaginative sandwiches. And every once in a while, I'll get a hot dog just to feel like a kid again.

UPDATED: Fort Worth Star Telegram executes surprise layoffs on Thursday
This is my hometown paper. I am very shocked, but I have noticed that the paper keeps getting thinner and thinner, the stories shorter and shorter. Seeing these people's names makes it hit a little harder. David House, the paper's ombudsman, used to be my neighbor.
