Election ‘part of job’ for Burgess

U.S. Rep. Michael Burgess, R-Lewisville, heads in to vote at the Lewisville Municipal Annex on Tuesday.

U.S. Rep. Michael Burgess defeated Republican primary opponent James Herford Tuesday to move on to the November general election. Herford said one reason he ran was to take back the country, but in the end he could not take the District 26 seat away from Burgess, R-Lewisville, who defeated him in a landslide.


Johnson to stay in DA office
Paul Johnson defeated his only opponent Tuesday in his bid for a second four-year term as Denton County’s district attorney.

Five-term state rep fends off challenge
State Rep. Myra Crownover, R-Denton, was leading primary challenger Kurt Hyde by a wide margin late Tuesday in her bid for a sixth term in the Texas House.

May 8 election set for Providence incorporation vote
The Denton County Commissioners Court approved a motion to conduct a May 8 election on the incorporation of Providence Village into a city.

Holland earns Precinct 1 nod
Earning nearly two-thirds of the vote in Tuesday’s primary, Justice of the Peace Joe Holland will advance to face Democratic candidate and accountant William K. Barnett for the chance to retain his Precinct 1 seat in the November general election.

Incumbent J.W. Hand was leading two challengers late Tuesday in the Republican primary for Precinct 4 justice of the peace, but a runoff appeared likely.

Attorney Steve Burgess emerged from a three-way battle with incumbent Judge Jake Collier and lawyer David Moraine on Tuesday night to win the Republican nomination for the 158th District Court bench.

The hotly contested Republican primary race for probate judge will likely remain contested, as Denton County lawyers Bonnie Robison and Robert Ramirez plan to face each other in a runoff next month.

U.S. Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison kicked off a daylong tour of North Texas on Tuesday morning with a stop at Ruby’s Diner on the Square. Hutchison is seeking to top her opponents, political newcomer Debra Medina and Gov. Rick Perry, for the right to be the Republican gubernatorial nominee in the November general election.

Early ballots pile up
Early voting continues in Denton County for the March 2 primary election, and elections officials say numbers are on pace for a large increase over the last gubernatorial election. As of Monday, 8,081 early voting ballots had been cast in Denton County. That includes 7,283 Republicans and 798 Democrats.

Seats filled more often
Of the 101 people elected to serve on 17 area city councils, nine missed more than a quarter of the regular and special-call meetings in 2009. Eleven cities saw at least three council members missing at least 10 percent — two or more — of the meetings in 2009, according to a Denton Record-Chronicle analysis.

Texas Gov. Rick Perry made a short stop in Denton Friday morning, during the “crush and rush” of campaigning leading up to the primary election on March 2, with early voting already under way. Perry, a Republican seeking his third four-year term as governor, greeted more than 100 Denton County residents — most of whom were invited by Perry’s campaign through e-mail — at the Jupiter House coffee shop on the Square.

Incumbent Hand faces two challengers in Precinct 4
On a recent trip to a school in his district, Precinct 4 Justice of the Peace J.W. Hand said a principal thanked him for his service, saying he could name five students who would have not graduated had it not been for Hand’s work. Hand says remarks like that are fueling his bid for re-election in the March 2 Republican primary election. Standing in his way are challengers Dave Jahn and Scott Smith.
