The Open Wheel Road

The IndyCar Series begins its ’10 season Sunday on the streets of Sao Paulo with a bit of momentum on its side. The addition of Izod as the series’ title sponsor provides a sound backer that already is showing it is willing to spend on the sport. Also, Randy Bernard replaces Tony George as the corporate face of the IRL, bringing a promoter’s background from his days with the PBR. However, the series still faces some issues that likely will continue to work against it gaining serious traction on NASCAR’s popularity. Versus’ coverage was critically praised last year, though the fact is the channel still lacks the wide-spread carriage of ESPN. Also, IndyCar has long been a global series, but Danica Patrick and Marco Andretti are the only American-born drivers signed up to race in all 17 events. As the MILWAUKEE JOURNAL SENTINEL’s Dave Kallmann writes, IRL “needs American heroes” to improve its domestic profile.
