Texas redshirt freshman running back Chris Whaley didn't make a single appearance on the field last season as he struggled with injuries. At Tuesday's open practice, Whaley's powerful hits to would-be tacklers caught the eyes of the Texas coaches, who are looking to establish a more dominant running game to help take some pressure off Garrett Gilbert. "Chris [Whaley] is doing a good job," Mack Brown said. "We're trying to play him and Cody [Johnson]...

Carter, originally from Longview, is known around the Big 12 Conference for his facepaint and wild hairstyles during his time as a Red Raider....

The seven-game losing streak is history. Texas Tech is not, at least for one more day in the Phillips 66 Big 12 Championship. The Red Raiders (17-14) opened the second half with a 8-0 run and never relinquished command in an 82-67 victory over Colorado. Tech held the Buffs 34 points under their total from Saturday's meeting in Boulder. "It's a game we needed badly," Texas Tech coach Pat Knight said. John Roberson led four...

Associated Press writer Jeff Latzke reported that after recent visits to Norman, Okla., Spagnuolo and Rams GM Billy Devaney could be interested in taking multiple Oklahoma Sooners this year. Spagnuolo and Devaney were at Oklahoma's pro day on Tuesday to check out defensive tackle Gerald McCoy, offensive tackle Trent Williams and tight end Jermaine Gresham. The two will make another...

Texas Tech coach Pat Knight admitted that basketball at 11:30 in the morning can be an interesting proposition. Some of the players may not have been on the court competitively that early since their AAU days. The early start could be as good an explanation as any for the first half of the first game in the Phillips 66 Big 12 Championship, where Tech leads Colorado 35-31 at halftime. The Red Raiders hit just two...

Texas Tech basketball limped into last year's Big 12 Conference tournament with a 3-13 conference record and as the No. 11 seed. The Red Raiders had already lost twice to their first-round opponent, Texas A&M. But in the second half of the tournament game against the Aggies, forward Mike Singletary reeled off 29 consecutive points for the Red Raiders. He outscored A&M team, 29-18, in a nine-minute stretch in a game Tech went on to...

Texas Tech men's basketball coach Pat Knight was asked during Monday's teleconference why he does not wear a suit while coaching the Red Raiders. "I've got a contract with Under Armour," said Knight, adding that the Big 12 does not allow coaches to wear lapel pins, and so he wears Under Armour golf shirts instead of the company's lapel pins. "I pattern myself after football coaches," Knight said. "You don't see them with coats and...

2011 Lake Travis High School quarterback prospect Michael Brewer committed to Texas Tech Friday. Brewer (6-1, 175) will attend the Elite 11 summer camp, which is reserved for the best quarterback prospects in the nation. He will then try to help the Lake Travis Cavaliers defend their 2009 4A State Championship, the school's third consecutive state title after Texas' Garrett Gilbert won two at Lake Travis. I had the chance to speak with the newest...

Texas A&M can boost reputation in Big 12 tournament

David Harris/Texas A&M Special Contributor    Bio |  E-mail  |  News tips

After a week that saw the No. 23 Texas A&M men's basketball team sweep Oklahoma and Oklahoma State by double-digits, the Aggies saw their ranking... do nothing in both the AP and coaches' polls. At 22-8 and tied for second in the RPI's hardest conference in the country, one would think that the team has earned some semblance of national respect. Especially playing well after Derrick Roland went down with a broken leg on Dec....

Muschamp allowed one-year grace period to recruit like an assistant

Rainer Sabin/Reporter    Bio |  E-mail  |  News tips

Texas defensive coordinator Will Muschamp will be able to recruit the way he always has -- at least for another year. The Washington Post is reporting that the NCAA is allowing a one-year grace period since it imposed a rule that forces coaches-in-waiting, like Muschamp, to be saddled with the same recruiting restrictions as head coaches. Texas athletic director DeLoss Dodds was opposed to the legislation when it was passed: "Obviously, since this legislation impacts...
