Shootout at Red Bird apartments leaves 2 injured
12:59 PM CST on Wednesday, March 10, 2010
A domestic dispute at a Red Bird apartment complex ignited a shootout Tuesday night that left two people injured and a car and a couple of apartments full of bullet holes.
At 10:45 p.m., Dallas police received about a dozen phone calls about shots fired at the Mandalay Palms Apartment complex in the 7400 block of Chesterfield Drive.
One man was taken to Methodist Hospital after he suffered gunshot wounds to his legs, police said, and a 17-year-old drove himself to a hospital after a bullet hit him in the back while he was sitting inside a car. Police are unsure if one or both men were involved in the shootings.
The incident started with an argument between a woman and her boyfriend, who is possibly one of the injured men. The woman called her family during the fight, and the argument escalated. Witnesses told police that up to seven people were involved and at least two weapons were fired.
"Basically it was a shootout in the parking lot," said Dallas police Senior Cpl. Kevin Janse. "And two apartments and a vehicle were hit by the bullets."
The groups involved in the shootout were running between a couple of apartment complexes during the altercation.
Stray shots pierced the patio door of one woman’s apartment, though she and another person inside were unharmed, Janse said.
Aggravated assault charges and deadly conduct charges could be filed, Janse said, though detectives are still sorting out "this mess."
"There are a bunch of different charges that could be filed," he said. "It's going to be up to the detectives to determine what charges are applicable."
