The National Weather Service has dropped the thunderstorm watch for the immediate Dallas-Fort Worth area. Winds will still be gusty at times ... and there's a risk for fire danger in Tarrant, Denton and western counties. Original post @ 11:50 a.m. Fast-moving thunderstorms packing lightning and pea- to quarter-size hail pelted the Dallas-Fort Worth area this morning. By noon, the worst of the severe weather had passed, and the National Weather Service canceled its severe thunderstorm warning. A thunderstorm watch remains in effect through 3 p.m. for Dallas, Collin, Tarrant, Denton, Rockwall and Kaufman counties, but skies have already cleared in western Tarrant County.

Thanks to dallasnews.com reader S Wilson for a shot of the rainbow that formed over parts of Dallas yesterday. Several of you have commented recently about your frustration with debris pick ups from the big February snow storm. The City of Dallas says it is working as fast as possible and will update a map every three days to better communicate when pick ups will occur.

The National Weather Service and the City of Fort Worth will host a day-long symposium on March 24 to look back at the F3 tornado that ravaged downtown Fort Worth and other parts of Tarrant County on March 28, 2000. The twister claimed two lives, trashed a number of buildings (including the Bank One tower above) and caused more than $450 million dollars in damage. The symposium will look back at the storm and examine improvements in warning systems and preparedness since. You can go to this link for more details and registration information. Photo: DMN file

Not fun to think about on a pretty day like today, but the National Weather Service says all the precipitation in recent months has left our area at an above average risk for flooding. The Fort Worth Star-Telegram has a good story today about what the upcoming storm season could mean for those living near lakes. By the way, the NWS has a pretty nifty map for monitoring North Texas rivers.

Warmer temps have definitely found us again. On March 14, we'll also set our clocks an hour forward and gain extra afternoon daylight. I know that Daylight Saving Time often provokes plenty of opinion, so...
