Editorial: UAE's model behavior on women's rights
So much loud anger has emanated from, and been directed at, the Muslim world in recent years that significant developments marking true progress are easy to overlook. Progress, of course, is a relative term.

Editorial: Why the census is worth your time
We cringed a few weeks ago when we heard Rep. Michele Bachmann, R-Minn., briefly call for a boycott of the 2010 census, which she apparently thought would ask too many nosy questions yet not ask about U.S. citizenship or resident status.

Editorial: Federal streetcar grant boosts north Oak Cliff hopes
The track's not laid, and the money's not in the bank. Still, there's plenty of reason to cheer Washington's selection of Dallas – and particularly north Oak Cliff – as a place to invest money in a streetcar line.

Editorial: No need to add Dallas County toll authority
Sorting out regional priorities for transportation is a tough political balancing act that doesn't need another layer of politics, certainly not the level of decision-making linked to the Dallas County Commissioners Court, the definition of political dysfunction.

Editorial: Hill and company are a sad but not-so-sorry bunch
At last, after months of defiant bravado, defendants in the City Hall corruption scheme seemed sorry. But incredibly, they did not apologize for their misdeeds or for violating the public trust. They clearly were sorry about something else: that they got caught.

Editorial: Chile shows why infrastructure deserves care
Chile's earthquake released about 500 times more destructive energy that Haiti's did, and yet Chile's death toll was only in the hundreds, compared with more than 200,000 estimated dead in Haiti. That wasn't just luck.

Editorial: Greenville fire leaves a void in the city
Lower Greenville has long been one of the districts that help define Dallas. The loss by fire – whether temporary or permanent – of Terilli's Restaurant and Bar, Greenville Bar & Grill, Hurricane Grill and Mick's Bar leaves a void on the avenue.

Editorial: Hits and Misses
Thoughtful commentary disguised as snap judgments on a Texas Independence Day gift, making the best of a bad situation and an odd way to "drain the swamp" in Congress.

Editorial: State ed board shakeup could lead to stability
State Board of Education races rarely rise to the top of the political heap, even in Texas. But Mount Pleasant Republican Thomas Ratliff's election defeat of Don McLeroy to reach 15-member panel definitely qualifies as a "wow" event.

Editorial: What happens if schools fall short of higher bar?
President Barack Obama has proposed tying federal funds that states receive for low-income students to higher standards for students in those states. We like that idea, too, but we say that with one big worry.

Editorial: Here's hoping Hutchison finishes Senate term
Instead of resigning "win or lose," Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison should do what's best for Texas and return to Washington for the rest of her term, which expires in 2012. Yes, we're encouraging her to reverse course for the good of the state.

Editorial: State must stop improper student-teacher relationships
If a teacher engaged in an improper relationship, physical or otherwise, with your teenage son or daughter, you'd want that instructor fired, prosecuted and never able to get another job working with children. This isn't happening, not in all cases.

Editorial: Perry, White must hone messages for November
Now, with a Rick Perry-Bill White match-up set for November, both Texas gubernatorial contenders must recalibrate their messages and give voters a clearer sense of their visions for the next four years.

Editorial: Weak, corrupt leaders get the boot
Voters in key North Texas races took aim at weak leaders and corrupt politicians, declaring they’ve had enough. Most notable was Eric Johnson’s resounding defeat of District 100 state Rep. Terri Hodge, still on the ballot despite a felony guilty plea.

Editorial: Tea Party insurgents affect debate, not outcomes
Given the movement’s energy — and many Texans’ conservatism — you might have expected Tea Party-favored candidates to score big in Tuesday’s GOP primary. They didn’t.

Editorial: Our recommendations in 2010 primaries
Early voting and nearly all of the campaigning are over. Tuesday is Election Day for Texas' Republican and Democratic primaries. Here are the recommendations we've published in selected statewide and North Texas races.
