Updates: Cedar Hill vs. Houston Cy-Fair

4:52 PM Fri, Mar 05, 2010 |  |
Mark Dent/Reporter    E-mail  |  News tips

Cy-Fair 47, Cedar Hill 45 2.24 Fourth: The Longhorns are really playing aggressive now and Cy-Fair is appearing timid. Two Cedar Hill players just dove on the floor to force a turnover, and on the ensuing possession, Diara Moore made an and-one layup. She'll shoot the free throw after this timeout. A quick negative though: BreAnna Dawkins has fouled out for Cedar Hill. Cy-Fair 47, Cedar Hill 43, 3.14 fourth quarter: The Longhorns pull within...

10:36 AM Fri, Mar 05, 2010 |  |
Kyle Whitfield/HS GameTime Editor    Bio |  E-mail  |  News tips

Here are a few question and answers from Wednesday's live basketball chat with HS GameTime's Matt Wixon and Damon L. Sayles: Q: How do North Crowley and Plano West matchup? Sayles: "North Crowley is like that mosquito at a picnic. They are always around the action, and you can't get rid of them. The team has a bunch of 6-2 and 6-3 tweeners who know the game of basketball. Add in star junior guard Kyan...

Mark Dent/Reporter    E-mail  |  News tips

Arlington Heights, which hosted the tournament at Pecan Valley Golf Course last weekend, won the girls team competition with a score of 708 and finished second on the boys side with a 632. Southwest Christian placed first in the boys competition. Waxahachie finished third and Allen finished fourth. In addition to winning the girls team competition, Arlington Heights also won the individual title. Chelsea Mocio shot a two-round score of 151, winning by four strokes....

Mansfield Summit's Amy Moody signs with Oral Roberts

10:25 AM Fri, Mar 05, 2010 |  |
Mark Dent/Reporter    E-mail  |  News tips

Amy Moody, a 5-10 guard from Summit, will play her college basketball for Oral Roberts. Moody was one of the best all-around players in the area. She averaged 10.1 points, 5.1 rebounds and 3.1 assists a game this past season. Last year, Moody played on Summit's state championship team, and she also played volleyball for Summit.....

38th Denton Invitational Golf Tournament starts today

10:16 AM Fri, Mar 05, 2010 |  |
Mark Dent/Reporter    E-mail  |  News tips

As has been the case for much of the Denton Invitational's existence, the field for this weekend's tournament should be strong. The tournament, played at Robson Ranch today and Denton Country Club Saturday, features 12 5A schools and 16 4A schools. McKinney Boyd and Liberty Christian, not mention two Oklahoma schools, provide strong contenders for the 5A championship. Highland Park, defending state champ Richardson Pearce and the Frisco schools are among those competing at the...

Sayles: Marcus 'the most dangerous team' remaining in 5A playoffs

9:36 AM Fri, Mar 05, 2010 |  |
Kyle Whitfield/HS GameTime Editor    Bio |  E-mail  |  News tips

Take a look at Flower Mound Marcus' schedule this year. There are close games everywhere. In fact, you can count seven games decided by three points or less. In those games, Marcus is 6-1. The lone loss was to DeSoto, 44-42, on Jan. 5. "I think Marcus is the most dangerous team of the four remaining in 5A Region I," HS GameTime's Damon L. Sayles said in this week's basketball live chat. "If you look...

Timberview-Wakeland final should be fun

9:05 AM Fri, Mar 05, 2010 |  |
Matt Wixon/Reporter    Bio |  E-mail  |  News tips

Mansfield Timberview vs. Frisco Wakeland in Saturday's 4A final (3:30 p.m.). I always like to see an all-area final, and I hope it's a good one. I'll give Timberview the edge going in because it is so balanced with outside shooting, players who can get to the hoop and a dominating insid presence. Final note from Thursday night's Timberview game ... Timberview opponent Cibolo Steele got 31 points from guard Meighan Simmons, who has signed...

Wakeland's great playoff run reaches 4A final

11:06 PM Thu, Mar 04, 2010 |  |
Matt Wixon/Reporter    Bio |  E-mail  |  News tips

This is the lead to my column for tomorrow. The rest will post later tonight. AUSTIN - When the Frisco Wakeland girls arrived at the Frank Erwin Center, nobody climbed a ladder to measure the 10 feet from the floor to the hoop. But that's only because coach Darilyn Krempin didn't have a ladder to re-create the Hoosiers moment. What she did have was the speech from the movie about how, whether the game was...

Update: Mansfield Timberview beats Cibolo Steele, 59-40

10:29 PM Thu, Mar 04, 2010 |  |
Mark Dent/Reporter    E-mail  |  News tips

Timberview 59, Steele 40, Final: Timberview advanced to Saturday's 4A state final. It will be an all-area title game, with Timberview taking on Frisco Wakeland. Timberview 58, Steele 40, 1:40, 4th: Timberview putting the game away. Timberview 54, Steele 40, 3:21, 4th: Steele cut the lead to eight at one point, but Timberview is still in control. Steele has only hit 10 of 50 shots (20 percent). Timberview 44, Steele 33 end of third: Timberview...

Update: Wakeland defeats Del Valle, 39-34

8:32 PM Thu, Mar 04, 2010 |  |
Matt Wixon/Reporter    Bio |  E-mail  |  News tips

Congrats to Wakeland for the victory. It will play in the 4A state final on Saturday. I'll have a wrapup later. -- Fourth quarter -- Wakeland 39, Del Valle 34, FINAL: After a Del Valle basket, Haley Texada made one of two free throws for Wakeland. Jackie Patterson made a clinching steal on Del Valle's next possession, and it led to a breakaway hoop for Haley Texada. Wakeland 36, Del Valle 32, 35 seconds: Jackie...

Frisco Wakeland about to make its state debut

6:36 PM Thu, Mar 04, 2010 |  |
Matt Wixon/Reporter    Bio |  E-mail  |  News tips

We're about 20 minutes from the start of the first 4A state semifinal featuring Frisco Wakeland against Del Valle. Wakeland is making its first state appearance, and a month ago, it didn't look like the Wolverines would be here. Wakeland lost two of its final three regular-season games - to district champion Frisco and third-place McKinney North - before beating four state-ranked teams to make the state tournament. Wakeland won those games by an average...

Who's the better player: Lincoln's LeBryan Nash or Pinkston's Tony Mitchell?

3:28 PM Thu, Mar 04, 2010 |  |
Kyle Whitfield/HS GameTime Editor    Bio |  E-mail  |  News tips

Anyone have a clear-cut answer to that one? I'm not sure there is one to be honest. These are easily two of the top players in the Dallas area. Mitchell's season stats are a bit better, and his team is still competing for a state title after Pinkston downed Lincoln, 61-60, in OT earlier in the week. Make your case for the better player on our HS GameTime's new forum -- click here to see...
