In the 1820s, the Tawakoni tribe came into conflict with Anglo-American settlers. The name Tawakoni is interpreted as "river bend among red sand hills." True to their name, they had settled in Texas near the Brazos River. Forced by settlers to endure a migration northward, they spent time along the Trinity River as well.
