Are the Cowboys really changing their free-agent philosophy?

3:48 PM Fri, Mar 05, 2010 |  |
Todd Archer/Reporter    Bio |  E-mail  |  News tips

There's panic in the streets. It's the first day of free agency and the Cowboys have done, gulp, nothing. No signings. No visits. And from the sounds of it, not really any calls either. My gosh, what are they doing? This doesn't jibe with what Jerry Jones said last week at the NFL Scouting Combine when he wanted his players nervous, that there would be 10-11 new faces in 2010, that they cannot be complacent....

Cowboys would receive first-round pick for Marcus Spears

3:18 PM Fri, Mar 05, 2010 |  |
Todd Archer/Reporter    Bio |  E-mail  |  News tips

I want to attempt to clear up some confusion on the tender the Cowboys made to Marcus Spears and what they would receive as compensation if he were allowed to leave. And some of it has to do with Miles Austin. The Cowboys put the "original round" tender on Spears of $1.226 million on Thursday. I stated previously that the Cowboys would receive only a second-round pick in return if they chose not to match...

Worst Cowboys free-agent signings: No. 1 Mike Vanderjagt

3:00 PM Fri, Mar 05, 2010 |  |
Gerry Fraley/Reporter    Bio |  E-mail  |  News tips

No. 1 worst: Kicker Mike Vanderjagt. The deal: Three years, $4.5 million, with a $2.5-million signing bonus. Reason he was a bad signing: In the final exhibition game of 2006, Mike Vanderjagt missed two field-goal tries of less than 34 yards. Just the preseason, the cocksure Vanderjagt said. Nothing to worry about. "Somebody tell the kicker that the coach is worried," Bill Parcells growled in response. After years of getting by on minimum-wage kickers, the...

Cowboys see two 2010 opponents improve today

2:13 PM Fri, Mar 05, 2010 |  |
Todd Archer/Reporter    Bio |  E-mail  |  News tips

This is why it's dangerous to say a game or schedule will be easy or hard before a season starts. The Cowboys match up against the NFC North in 2010. The two easier games looked to be against Chicago and Detroit at Cowboys Stadium. On the first day of free agency the Bears and Lions have improved. How much? Not sure, but they are better now that Julius Peppers and Chester Taylor are on their...

Marc Colombo roster spot is safe

1:53 PM Fri, Mar 05, 2010 |  |
Todd Archer/Reporter    Bio |  E-mail  |  News tips

On Monday the Cowboys paid right tackle Marc Colombo $2 million as part of the $8.1 million option bonus he received after signing an extension with the Cowboys late in the 2008 season. Some of you wondered if Colombo could be a possible player cut this off-season, but this move shows me he is safe for 2010. He is scheduled to make a $2.14 million base salary this year. While Colombo struggled against Ray Edwards...

Panthers say goodbye to Jake Delhomme, $12.5 million

1:46 PM Fri, Mar 05, 2010 |  |
Todd Archer/Reporter    Bio |  E-mail  |  News tips

Jake Delhomme was cut by Carolina and it brought just about everybody to tears in Charlotte, from Delhomme to GM Marty Hurney to coach John Fox. Delhomme did a lot of great things for the Panthers, leading them to a Super Bowl appearance a few years ago. The Cowboys actually had him in for a visit in 2003 but Jerry Jones told coach Bill Parcells that he wanted the coach to work with Quincy Carter...

Cowboys tendered Alan Ball, Steve Octavien, too

1:39 PM Fri, Mar 05, 2010 |  |
Todd Archer/Reporter    Bio |  E-mail  |  News tips

Lost amid all the buzz surrounding the 11 qualifying offers the Cowboys made to their restricted free agents, was the offers made to their two exclusive rights free agents Alan Ball and Steve Octavien. Ball was tendered a one-year deal worth $545,000 and Octavien a one-year deal at $470,000. Ball started three games at free safety in Ken Hamlin's absence because of an ankle injury. He finished the year with 19 tackles and one tackle...

Cowboys' Emmitt Smith: Why he loved beating the Redskins; why Jimmy Johnson would never have allowed T.O. antics

1:17 PM Fri, Mar 05, 2010 |  |
Mark Francescutti/Sports Editor    Bio |  E-mail  |  News tips

SLAM magazine has an extensive interview with former Cowboy Emmitt Smith, who was recently named to be inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Some highlights of the interview: On how his Cowboys teams would have dealt with Terrell Owens, and how coach Jimmy Johnson would have handled him: "Jimmy would have found a way. And I don't think Jimmy would have put up with his antics towards him. You know Terrell had a...

Best Cowboys free-agent signings: No. 1 Deion Sanders

1:00 PM Fri, Mar 05, 2010 |  |
David Moore/Reporter    Bio |  E-mail  |  News tips

No. 1 best: Cornerback Deion Sanders The deal: Seven years, $25 million included a $12.99 million signing bonus Reason he was a good signing: Jerry Jones loves to make big, bold gestures. This was the biggest of all. The Cowboys' quest for a third consecutive Super Bowl title was thwarted by San Francisco. Sanders was part of the 49ers team that beat the Cowboys in the NFC Championship Game and went on to win the...

Fraley: Cowboys more likely in Super Bowl than Rangers in World Series

12:32 PM Fri, Mar 05, 2010 |  |
Mark Francescutti/Sports Editor    Bio |  E-mail  |  News tips

Dallas Morning News sports writer Gerry Fraley answered your Cowboys and Rangers questions this week. Some highlights: On which has greater odds: Rangers making it to the World Series or Cowboys making it to the Super Bowl: "Cowboys to the Super Bowl more likely than Rangers to World Series. Remember, Cowboys play in NFC while Rangers are in supercharged American League." On if Wade Phillips is good enough to coach the Cowboys to the Super...

Fraley: On if Terrell Owens could return to Cowboys, top free-agent goals

12:23 PM Fri, Mar 05, 2010 |  |
Mark Francescutti/Sports Editor    Bio |  E-mail  |  News tips

Dallas Morning News sports writer Gerry Fraley answered your Cowboys and Rangers questions this week. Some highlights: On if the Cowboys have any interest in free agent Terrell Owens: "I'd say no, but never say never with Jerry Jones. At this point, I detect no interest. Baltimore could be Owens' next landing spot. Go to a team that he rejected a few years ago." On middle linebacker as a spot of need for the Cowboys,...

Video: Preparations for the demolition of Texas Stadium

9:28 AM Fri, Mar 05, 2010 |  |
Todd Davis/Editor    Bio |  E-mail  |  News tips

No, the Baltimore Ravens didn't bring Texas Stadium to its knees, it just felt like it at the end of the 2008 season in the Dallas Cowboys' finale there. We offer this video of the preparations being made to take the former Cowboys home stadium down on April 11....

First "What are the Cowboys doing?" e-mail has arrived

8:56 AM Fri, Mar 05, 2010 |  |
Todd Archer/Reporter    Bio |  E-mail  |  News tips

We have a winner. At 7:51 a.m. I received my first, "Why aren't the Cowboys doing anything in free agency?" email. I thought it would get to Noon before I got one. I'm sure many more will come because I don't see the Cowboys being active players here early in the signing period. I'll protect the e-mailer but he wants Jamal Williams ... NOW. And he wants Oshiomogho Atogwe, Brodney Pool or Darren Sharper at...

Tony Romo's off-season includes indoor soccer

8:00 AM Fri, Mar 05, 2010 |  |
Todd Davis/Editor    Bio |  E-mail  |  News tips

Cowboys Stadium gives quarterback Tony Romo a chance to play some indoor football during the season. During the off-season, he's getting some indoor soccer in as well. TMZ.com reports that Romo is playing 6-on-6 indoor soccer this winter and has some footage from a reader to back it up. The site mentions putting his $67 million contract in jeopardy with potential injuries, but athletes have injured themselves getting out of bathtubs. Heck, maybe he's the...

Todd Davis/Editor    Bio |  E-mail  |  News tips

Next big thing: NFL Draft is April 22-24 Cowboys on TV None This date in Cowboys history 1993: The Super Bowl XXVII champion Cowboys visit President Bill Clinton at the White House. Cowboys birthdays Michael Irvin, Pro Football Hall of Fame wide receiver (1988-1999) and 5-time Pro Bowl selection, born in 1966....
