Dallas plans Saturday roundup of ticket scofflaws
05:29 PM CST on Friday, March 5, 2010
The city of Dallas is launching a roundup Saturday, hoping to corral as many people as possible who have outstanding warrants.
The effort, which will target traffic offenders and others, is part of a statewide effort to catch as many people as possible who have ignored citations and, as a result, have become the subjects of arrest warrants.
Those people found will be arrested and jailed, city officials said.
In Dallas alone, there are more than 400,000 outstanding warrants, said Mary Morris, spokesperson for the city marshal's office. On average, she said, each person being sought has roughly three warrants in his or her name.
People with outstanding citations can avoid arrest by appearing at the Lew Sterrett Justice Center at Commerce Street and Riverfront Boulevard (formerly Industrial Boulevard). The lobby there is open from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. seven days a week.
They can also pay citations at the city courts building (the old Dallas Municipal Building) at Harwood and Main. A new Saturday court is open there from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Fines can also be paid online at the city's Web site, www.dallascityhall.com.
