SURPRISE, Ariz. - The Rangers played an abbreviated intrasquad game Tuesday, going 4 1/2 innings to get all of their healthy pitches some game-situation experience before the exhibition schedule starts. After the jump, come the observations. Some are noteworthy; others not so much.

SURPRISE, Ariz. - Reliever Chris Ray did not appear in the Rangers' pair of intrasquad games due to some "general soreness" in the back of his shoulder. The Rangers believe it may not be anything more than some mild tightness, but since he has a history of arm problems, they want to take every precaution. Ray is scheduled to throw a bullpen session on Wednesday.

SURPRISE, Ariz. - It looked and felt like baseball Monday, even if it was just an intrasquad game featuring a lot of extra sacrifice bunt work and pitchers often facing extra hitters after their inning was completed. The "home" team comprised mostly of minor leaguers (with big league pitchers) took a 4-3 win on Mitch Moreland's eighth-inning double off Kasey Kiker. Flip the page to find the observations I found most interesting:

SURPRISE, Ariz. - In the third inning, Julio Borbon demonstrated what kind of weapon he can be, by bunting a ball up the third base line for a one-out single. He stole second despite a pitchout when Taylor Teagarden's throw was high, then also stole third. Borbon has said he expects to steal at least 50 bases this season.

SURPRISE, Ariz. - You can look at Scott Feldman's inning of work two different ways. For the optimist, it took him just 10 pitches to retire three batters. For the pessimist, the four batters he faced in those 10 pitches comprised the heart of the Rangers order: Vladimir Guerrero (first pitch ground ball), Ian Kinsler (second pitch fly out), Nelson Cruz (singled after getting behind 0-and-2) and Chris Davis (first pitch ground ball).
