Nick Holditch shot a 69 at Turtle Hill Golf Course in Muenster on Feb. 20. The score was a single-round record for the Raccoons golf team. Holditch, a senior and the team captain, finished second at the tournament, as did the team, comprised of Holditch, Jordan Allen, Warren Schorr, Chevas Stauffacher and Michael Wiggins. Last season, the Frisco boys golf team won their district championship and advanced to state. For more about the Raccoons, check...
When Saturday rolls around, a pair of local boys teams could be playing for the 4A Region I title. Unfortunately, you'll have to be in San Angelo to see a potential game between Mansfield Legacy (34-9) and The Colony (29-8). The pairings for that region are below, and here's a quick primer on The Colony: No seniors! Not among the top players, anyway, which makes The Colony a serious threat to make it to state...
Who are the best players from the Dallas-Fort Worth area in men's college basketball right now? Here are my picks. Let me know if you disagree and think a different player deserves to be on this list. FIRST TEAM Marquez Haynes, UT-Arlington (Irving): The senior guard ranks third in the nation in scoring, averaging 22.9 points per game. Donald Sloan, Texas A&M (Seagoville): The senior guard ranks fifth in the Big 12 in scoring (18.1...
After each UIL state basketball tournament, a five-member all-tournament team is selected. While putting together a package on the top 10 UIL girls championship games of the last decade -- which will run tomorrow -- I thought of which five area girls players would be on an all-decade team. Based on play at the state tournament, my area all-decade team would be: Erin Grant, Mansfield The only player to start on each of Mansfield's four...
McDonald's announced six male and six female finalists for the Morgan Wootten Player of the Year Award, and the list includes Duncanville's Perry Jones and Irving MacArthur's Odyssey Sims, both Baylor signees. The annual award, named after DeMatha High School coaching legend Morgan Wootten, recognizes the nation's top boys and girls high school senior student-athletes. Winners will be announced March 10. The boys finalists are: Harrison Barnes (Ames High School - Ames, Iowa), Kyrie Irving...
Red Oak boys basketball coach Preston Foster isn't blind to the fact. He knows some basketball followers already have either Lancaster, Kimball or Pinkston penciled in as the 4A Region II representative at the state tournament. It's a little unfair, particularly since his ball club is just as capable of representing the region at state. Red Oak (25-10) will have to show its worth Friday in a regional semifinal against Pinkston. Players such as Earl... March 2, 2010
It was announced today that Oklahoma sophomore guard Willie Warren will have season-ending arthroscopic surgery on his injured right ankle. Warren is a former North Crowley star who was SportsDay's area player of the year for the 2007-08 season. OU said Warren will have the surgery today. Warren, last season's Big 12 Conference freshman of the year, is the Sooners' leading scorer, averaging 16.3 points per game....
The Texas Girls Coaches Association released its updated state rankings for softball. Which area teams that were left out do you think deserve to be ranked? Coppell, which has 10 players who will go on to play college softball, is ranked No. 1 in Class 5A. Coppell is 10-1, with its only loss coming to second-ranked Fort Bend Clements. Mesquite Horn is No. 8 in 5A, and Flower Mound Marcus is No. 9. I think...
Class 2A Lone Oak football coach Randy Jackson has been recommended as the new football head coach at Class 4A Mesquite Poteet, pending school board approval Monday. Jackson has a career record of 84-37 in 10 seasons as a football head coach. In six seasons at Lone Oak, he's led the football team to a 50-20 record. He also has been a head coach at DeKalb, Mason and Paducah. His teams have won at least...
Arlington Bowie offensive coordinator Trent Fuller has been named the new football head coach at Arlington Lamar. Fuller has big shoes to fill, stepping in for coaching legend Eddy Peach, who recently resigned after 40 years at Lamar and more than 300 career victories. Fuller has been the offensive coordinator at Bowie the last four seasons under Kenny Perry. Fuller spent one season at Colleyville Heritage before coming over to Bowie. Before Heritage, Fuller coached...
South Oak Cliff fans remember J'mison Morgan as the player who led South Oak Cliff to a 4A title after Darrell Arthur graduated and headed to Kansas. He wasn't a star on offense, but he was such a defensive force that he became a big-time recruit. At UCLA, however, Morgan is known as the "enigma." That's according to this story from the L.A. Times...
In last year's 4A Region II final, Kimball took the lead against Lancaster early and never gave it up in a 66-54 victory. (Here's the story from last year.) Now Lancaster gets another shot at Kimball in this week's 4A Region II semifinals. Kimball (26-7) and Lancaster (33-2) play in the 7:30 game Friday at Garland's Special Events Center. The 6 p.m. game features two more local teams, Red Oak (25-10) and Pinkston (34-9). One...

This weekend's 5A Region I tournament should be great with Arlington Bowie, Flower Mound Marcus, North Crowley and Plano West battling for a spot in the state tournament. Games are at the Wilkerson-Greines Activity Center in Fort Worth. It's the first time in six years that the 5A Region I tournament has been all local teams. Back in 2004, Grand Prairie, Mansfield Summit, Cedar Hill and Colleyville Heritage were the teams. Cedar Hill won the...
