Age and contract catching up to Flozell Adams?

8:07 AM Mon, Mar 01, 2010 |  |
David Moore/Reporter    Bio |  E-mail  |  News tips

Jerry Jones sees a need for "obvious improvement'' in the offensive line heading into next season. When asked about left tackle Flozell Adams, the Cowboys owner paused for 14 seconds before he formed an answer.

"If we could have a season like that out of him (again) this year, it would be great,'' Jones said. "I was very pleased with his season.

"But certainly, that's the question mark. That's when you have decisions to make right there, can you get a year like that out of him.''

Adams turns 35 in May and is scheduled to make $7.5 million. Those factors, coupled with the emergence of Doug Free, spark an internal debate about Adams' value to the club.

I think we should get a replacement for Adams, maybe Doug Free. He can not handle a speed rusher.Tony will never be able to be a great quarterback unless we can get a tackle on the left side that can protect him against good teams.

Flozell Adams release is long overdue and I've supported the guy forever, basically there is not a better option and that is why he has remained a Cowboy and they gave him a crazy contract extension. The Cowboys will not win a Super Bowl until they find a better replacement. The 27th pick will not be the answer for the upcoming season to replace Adams and who is to say a Bruce Campbell or Trent Williams will ever (mentally or production wise) make it in the NFL. That will set the team back for years if they guess wrong. Doug Free played really well on the right side but he wouldn't make it on the left side, by the way, I think Free will eventually start over Columbo at some point this upcoming season. Here is my question, Marcus McNeil, LT for the Chargers, who is 26 years old and has been a pro bowler for 3 out of his 4 seasons in the NFL, has been tendered for a 1st and a 3rd. To all Cowboy fans out here, would you at least make an offer on the guy (a bigger offer than what Adams contract is worth because obviously they would release Flo) and know what your getting at LT for the next 6-10 years before the window of opportunities door closes? The guy is 6'7" - 336 lbs and is considered one of the best in football. The Cowboys couldn't do any better if they picked a LT with both picks #27 and #91, certainly not in the next couple seasons.
The other pressing need for change is signing Antrel Rolle this Friday and releasing Ken Hamlin. If the offseason goes as follows and the 2010-2011 season is anywhere close to as injury free as they were this past season, no doubt they will be playing at Cowboys Stadium the first week in February 2011.

1st rd tender on Miles Austin
2nd rd tender on Spears, Bowen and Sensabaugh
lowest tender on Proctor, Hurd and Hatcher
Ball and Octavian don't have a choice
Sign Rolle when released and then release Hamlin
Sign McNeil and release Flozell
with the second rd pick, go for best available no matter what position but know that we need an upgrade for KR/PR and hope that Dexter McCluster or Mardy Gilyard are available.
Add a linebacker and D-lineman (beef cake)
Maybe most importantly- get a kicker, they just added Boniol to help coach the position and Tiffin from Alabama could be had in the 6th round is the best student from Boniol's summer camp and i think this was the reason he was hired.
Get more out of Bennet, Choice and Roy and the Cowboys will hoist the Lombardi!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

"Can you get a year like that out of him?"

So,Jerry, now, again, you've revealed what an A...... you are. Flozell is not a piece of property, like a mule. What else can you "get out of him" before he's too old to play anymore? Using those standards, you should have retired in 96. Not a bad idea, though, huh?

Fire is no blocking a******. There are hundreds of linemen who would be better. Besides Flozell always seems to get the penalties at just the wrong time....bu bye

JJT's awful columns' - congratulations, you wasted 30 minutes typing something that all of us are going to ignore. Now, get back to work fixing my car.

When Jerry doesnt come out and say "insert players name" will be with us next year it means the player wont be around next year. After hearing this I expect Flo to be gone next year. His contract is big and he's old.

I would like to see them draft a lt in the first round as long as one of the top 5 are still around.

"JJT'S awfull columns" I like your idea of Dexter McCluster or Mardy Gilyard in the 2nd rd for kick/punt returns and wr/rb help.

If Flo is so bad, how did the Vikings make us look so bad as soon as he went down?

I've been on Flozell's case for a long time. As we all know he commits far too many penalties. He also has a tough time with speed rushers. But overall, he's still a hell of a blocker, especially on the run. We saw how vital he is, when he was knocked out of the Vikings game. They just killed Romo after Flozell went out.

I think Flozell should accept a smaller contract and be part of a rotation along the offensive line. If he doesn't sign off to that, then release him.

JJT's awful columns has absolutely no idea what he's talking about.
For one, Doug Free is a LEFT TACKLE who happened to play right tackle in place of Colombo because he is our only backup O-Lineman worth a darn. He is better suited for the left side, was drafted for the left side, and has been playing the left side all his life.
Secondly, Flozell is definitely not his old self. But there aren't "hundreds of guys who can block better" or whatever else some of these clowns claim. We were VERY successful in the running game when running behind Flo and for all the nonsense I hear about speed rushers, he shut out Trent Cole for consecutive weeks in the biggest games of the season. Jared Allen didn't do a darn thing against him and Allen didn't do a darn thing against Free when Free was at LT either. Allen's only play and sack came when he was lined up on Witten.
As the old saying goes, it's better to cut a player one year too early than one year too late. I believe Flo has one year left in him, but if we choose to let him go considering the finances and the emergence of Doug Free it is definitely understandable. We just need to cover our butts in the draft and finally address the O-Line with young, quality players.

All foe the swap of 1st and 3rd for Mcneil

Just sayin- what are just sayin- absolutely nothing. If you want me to fix your Kia Sophia you have to wait your turn I'm working on your wife's right now. Besides do you have any football insight or are you too busy in the drive thru working at Burger King- I'm just sayin

i can't see Flo on the team next season & D.Free looked better as a RT then he's ever looked at LT. the is we can't go into the season with either on protecting RoMo's blind side again.
the left side of the line was horrible & guys were burning Flo & Kosier. with Igor being a 2 down player i'm going to say Spears will be released. he's never lived up to his 1st rd potential & he's not worth any tender. he will be replaced by FA or the 1st day of the draft, we need a guy with some explosion , power & also stop the run. 1 pure run stopper DE is ok but teams are throwing more on 1st down now so we need a guy thats a threat evey situation, someone to help Ratliff out.
Ken Hamlin won't be wearing a star on his helmet next year but i don't know if the rookie is a better SS then a FS, he played SS in college if i remember correct. if were going to need a ballhawk FS that can tackle & they should take the best LT/FS on the board in the 1ST round & get the next in the 2nd rd, in the third you get get the best WR/Returner on the board or replace Spears if it wasn't done in FA.
we wont have a lot of guys like Watkins, Carpenter, etc bcuz those 53 roster spots are becoming more important with different type players for different positions.
Special Teams is actually becoming more important with field position, everyone needs a burner that make that 1st miss and take it to the house on returns. we missed out big time with D.Jackson, Jerry Rice pit his word that this kid would be a great player but we reached for retarded MartyB instead of reaching for a kid begging to prove something. it will surprise me if MartyB is the #2TE in the season, he's going to lose his job to J.Phillips & if Jerry could find a sucker to give him a 2nd now he would jumped all over it. everyone in Valley Ranch knows martyB's time is getting short & all his air time on the internet & partying will disappear like like him. if they draft another late rd TE to develope on the PS then MartyB could be on his last year.
i can't wait to see how Jerry, Wade & Garrett plug the holes to keep RoMo alive. i'm not a huge fan of having 2 kickers & hope either Bulher can learn to kick FGs or find one late in the draft. theirs a few really good accurate FG kickers that can kickoff too, i hate to lose a hard player like D.Bulher bcuuz of his ability to lead the league in touch backs but we could find one that would allow us to make a tackle before the 20. its just to easy to have 1 guy doing it all not to make it happen, we already got 3 QBs so the roster can't handle but so much pork.
we still have a few wildcards from last years draft that could actually turn out to make an impact, it would especially be nice to see some of the ILBs & challenge James/Brooking, Brewster was suspose to be a steal & with a season of watching film during the rehab process he sould be more NFL ready, it should give Proctor & Kosier a challenge at the position.
we have a young team with a large window but were going to need to upgrade & cut the ones that can't contribute. like when Ken Hamlin went down neither P.Watkins or A.Ball did anything & looked lost most the game just like Ken.
Carpenter, Watkins, Adams, Spears, Hamlin, Procter, McQuistan and i'm sure theirs a few more that are stopping us for being winners. guys like Kosier, MartyB, MBIII, TnEw can't play to the top of their potential then they need to be looked at too

JJT's Awful Columns,

Your posting at 8:53am is dead on. I couldn't have said it better myself, and I agree with 99% of everything you are suggesting.

Free isn't big enough, nor does he have the experience to start for Dallas at left tackle this season. Also, there isn't a left tackle in this draft (at #27) that would be able to come in and start. Why not get a Pro-Bowl left tackle with plenty of rubber left on his tires?

You made some very good points regardless of what Ray says. Ignore him, as he hasn't followed the Cowboys very closely.

Age must be catching up with Roy Williams to. Looks like Grandpa trying to catch and run routes. Oh wait, he's only 26.

Couldn't Flo move over to Guard and let an aging Kosier be released?? With Flo's size and feet he should still be good at the guard slot. Either Free or a FA could do better at LT.

Age Mister

Checking out other dudes huh Dogger?

Could they sign a younger version of Flo of they let Spears leave as a FA (with the final 8 FA rules)? Free can do RT, not LT, and I don't want to trust a rookie LT to protect Romo's blind side.

Kosier was actually the best lineman last year. Also, drafting or signing a safety is stupid; retain the guys they had last year.

Get real posters, McNeil will not just be allowed to walk out the door in SD. Free is a fine swing tackle backup, read again, backup. The only option, unless you draft a stud LT (doubtful)is to move Big Leonard out to the left, and slide a new body in at RG. There are some OGs on the free agency market that can play that could take his place. And yes, Davis has played the position before and can handle it. At UT he smothered all DEs. He played in AZ at that spot as well. He's basically being paid like a tackle, why not put him on the edge and say go? Kosier in the last year of contract and will prob not be renewed, his time is up. This is a make or break year for the O-Line in Arlington.
