Arlington Sam Houston junior QB Jamal Turner commits to Nebraska

10:15 PM Thu, Jan 28, 2010 |  |
Brandon George/Reporter    Bio |  E-mail  |  News tips

Arlington Sam Houston junior dual-threat quarterback Jamal Turner said Thursday that he has orally committed to Nebraska, choosing the Huskers over Alabama and Oklahoma.

Turner (6-1, 175), whose multiple scholarship offers included Texas A&M and TCU, led Sam Houston in passing and rushing last season. Turner, who has 4.4-second 40-yard dash speed, completed 154-of-249 pass attempts for 1,816 yards and 13 touchdowns with 10 interceptions. He also rushed for 1,809 yards and 19 touchdowns on 224 carries.

Turner said he was in attendance for three Nebraska games last year: a regular-season game against Oklahoma in Nebraska, the Big 12 title game against Texas in Arlington and the Pacific Life Holiday Bowl against Arizona in San Diego. Turner was being recruited by Nebraska assistant coach Tim Beck, the former Mansfield Summit head coach.

"I know that this is where I want to go. This is a final decision," Turner said. "I was waiting for the right time, and I wanted to go ahead and get it out of the way."

Oral commitments are nonbinding. The first day a recruit in the Class of 2011 can sign a national letter of intent is Feb. 2, 2011.

Plano West DE Jackson Jeffcoat narrows college choices to Texas, Oklahoma and Houston

8:45 PM Wed, Jan 27, 2010 |  |
Brandon George/Reporter    Bio |  E-mail  |  News tips

Plano West senior defensive end Jackson Jeffcoat - one of the nation's top uncommitted seniors - has narrowed the schools he's considering to Texas, Oklahoma and Houston, his father Jim Jeffcoat said Wednesday night.

Jackson Jeffcoat eliminated Arizona State - where his father played college football - from his finalists, which had also once included Florida and Southern California.

Jim Jeffcoat, a former Dallas Cowboys defensive end, is the defensive line coach at Houston. Jackson Jeffcoat's twin sister Jacqueline has signed to play women's basketball at Oklahoma.

Previous reports had Jackson Jeffcoat planning to announce his final decision Sunday night on Fox 4, but Jim Jeffcoat said that's no longer the plan and that his son doesn't have a designated day selected to announce his decision before national signing day next Wednesday.

Jim Jeffcoat answered his son's cell phone Wednesday night and said that Jackson wasn't taking calls right now. Go figure. I'm sure that phone is ringing off the hook.

Nimitz DB Loften commits to Tennessee, other changes

10:52 PM Mon, Jan 25, 2010 |  |
Greg Riddle/Editor    Bio |  E-mail  |  News tips

Irving Nimitz defensive back Eddrick Loften said he has orally committed to Tennessee after decommitting from Oklahoma. Loften (5-10, 195) is No. 173 in Rivals.com's national recruiting rankings and is ranked as the 14th-best safety in the Class of 2010.

Loften said OU pulled his scholarship offer because he wanted to visit other schools. Tennessee recently changed coaches, with Derek Dooley replacing Lane Kiffin, but that didn't scare Loften away.

"Coach Dooley is an upfront guy, and he has a lot of plans to change Tennessee and get it back to what it used to be. ... I want to help,'' said Loften, who also considered Kansas, Texas A&M and Utah.

Rivals.com reported that Madison offensive lineman Javius Townsend (6-4, 297) -- ranked the nation's 56th-best tackle -- changed his commitment from Texas Tech to Oklahoma State. Also, Cedar Hill offensive lineman Josh Allen (6-2, 256) -- ranked as the nation's 11th-best center -- changed his commitment from Minnesota to Louisiana-Monroe according to Rivals.

Mesquite Horn QB Emory Miller commits to Wyoming

4:07 PM Mon, Jan 25, 2010 |  |
Brandon George/Reporter    Bio |  E-mail  |  News tips

Mesquite Horn senior quarterback Emory Miller said that he has orally committed to Wyoming, choosing the Cowboys over interest from Tulsa, Air Force, Sam Houston State, South Dakota State and Murray State.

Miller (5-11, 205) led Mesquite Horn in passing and rushing last season. Miller completed 215-of-337 pass attempts for 2,685 yards and 23 touchdowns with 11 interceptions and rushed 169 times for 727 yards and 11 touchdowns.

Miller said Wyoming uses the same spread offense as Mesquite Horn and that the school has a great nursing program. Miller said he plans to major in nursing.

"It's a perfect fit for me," Miller said.

Miller visited Wyoming last weekend and has now cancelled his trip to Air Force for this weekend.

Oral commitments are nonbinding. The first day a football player in the Class of 2010 can sign a national letter of intent is Feb. 3.

Lancaster sending another DB to FBS school

11:57 PM Sat, Jan 23, 2010 |  |
Greg Riddle/Editor    Bio |  E-mail  |  News tips

Lancaster continues to produce college defensive backs at a remarkable rate. Athlete Kenneth Penny (6-0, 170), who played wide receiver at Lancaster but was recruited as a defensive back, has orally committed to UNLV. Lancaster defensive backs Quentin Hayes (Oklahoma), Tyler Stephenson (Baylor) and Matt Thomas (Iowa State) had already committed to Football Bowl Subdivision schools.

This comes a year after Lancaster sent defensive backs Demontre Hurst (Oklahoma), Kerry Lewis (Minnesota), Joshua Brown (Trinity Valley) and Phillip Harvey (Northwestern State) on to the college ranks.

This season's Lancaster team has had five players commit in all, as defensive end Darius Lively committed to Louisiana-Monroe.

Tennessee coach Derek Dooley has been on the job less than a week. And during that time he has been on the recruiting trail -- one that seems to have branched off in Texas.

This past weekend, according to the Knoxville News-Sentinel, two Dallas-area recruits visited Rocky Top.

Skyline linebacker Corey Nelson, who had already committed to Texas A&M, and Irving Nimitz safety Eddrick Loften, who recently rescinded his verbal pledge to Oklahoma, took a tour of Tennessee's campus.

Signing Day is Feb. 3.

Plano West defensive end Jackson Jeffcoat will be a busy man in the coming days.

Jeffcoat is taking his official visit to Oklahoma on Friday but not before he'll receive a visit at his home Wednesday night from Texas coach Mack Brown, ESPN reports.

Widely regarded as the top uncommitted recruit in the nation, Jeffcoat's presumed final list of schools is Oklahoma, Texas, Arizona State and Houston (where his father, Jim, is the defensive line coach).

Jeffcoat said during the weekend of the U.S. Army All-American Bowl that he would likely make a decision by the end of the month.

Jackson Jeffcoat's father to remain at Houston, report says

Kyle Whitfield/HS GameTime Editor    Bio |  E-mail  |  News tips

As recruiting rumors continue to swirl, Jackson Jeffcoat's father is trying to calm things down a bit.

Jim Jeffcoat says he will remain the University of Houston's defensive line coach in 2010, FOX 26 in Houston reports, quashing any speculation he was headed to Oklahoma and might bring his five-star recruit son along with him.

There was talk the elder Jeffcoat was linked to an opening on Oklahoma's defensive coaching staff after Chris Wilson, the Sooners' former defensive end coach, recently took a co-defensive coordinator job at Mississippi State.

Jackson Jeffcoat, a standout defensive end at Plano West and arguably the top uncommitted recruit in the nation, has to decide on a school by Feb. 3, which is national signing day for college football.

Jeffcoat crosses Florida off his list

7:30 PM Tue, Jan 12, 2010 |  |
Rainer Sabin/Reporter    Bio |  E-mail  |  News tips

Cross Florida off Jackson Jeffcoat's list of potential suitors. The Plano West defensive end has canceled his visit to Gainesville this weekend.

"There's a lot of chaos going on down there," said Jeffcoat's father, Jim, a former member of the Dallas Cowboys.

He wouldn't elaborate on the situation. But a report in the Orlando Sentinel said that Jeffcoat decided to eliminate the Gators after they told him that no scholarships were available.

Considering that Jeffcoat is rated the No. 6 player in the nation by Rivals.com, that's a surprising admission by Florida, a program in a state of flux right now. Since Urban Meyer reneged on his resignation and then announced he would take an indefinite leave of absence without specifying the start date, things haven't exactly been stable or transparent in Gainesville.

Is Meyer running the show or is interim coach Steve Addazio? All Jim Jeffcoat knows is that he and his son want no part of it.

"I didn't think it was a good situation," Jim Jeffcoat said.

Now, Jeffcoat's son will choose from his remaining finalists -- Arizona State, Houston, Oklahoma, Texas and Southern California, a program that waved goodbye to Pete Carroll on Monday and welcomed Lane Kiffin as its new head coach Tuesday.

Garland's Tevin Jackson dislocated his wrist in Saturday's U.S. Army All-American bowl but is expected to be fully healthy within six weeks.

Jackson, who is committed to Texas, still finished with five tackles, a sack and a forced fumble in the game.

"He just landed on it the wrong way," Garland coach Jeff Jordan said. "It's nothing at all major."

Denton Record-Chronicle: Scotty Young shaky on Texas Tech commitment

9:27 PM Sat, Jan 09, 2010 |  |
Kyle Whitfield/HS GameTime Editor    Bio |  E-mail  |  News tips

Denton Ryan quarterback Scotty Young still isn't sure whether he'll honor his oral commitment to Texas Tech, and he has had discussions recently with Arizona State and Notre Dame, The Denton Record-Chronicle reported Saturday.

The probability of Young becoming a Red Raider likely hinges on whether new Texas Tech coach Tommy Tuberville retains offensive coordinator Lincoln Riley, the report says.

Young led all Dallas-area quarterbacks with 4,500 yards passing in 2009. He threw for 64 touchdowns - 15 more than any other area quarterback and just three short of Graham Harrell's 2003 state record. Young completed 287 of 475 pass attempts with just 13 interceptions.

Haltom's Wilson a force in US Army game Saturday

3:16 PM Sat, Jan 09, 2010 |  |
Kyle Whitfield/HS GameTime Editor    Bio |  E-mail  |  News tips

Plano West defensive end Jackson Jeffcoat didn't play in the U.S. Army All-American bowl because of a sprained ankle. But Haltom defensive tackle Reggie Wilson made sure an area player still stood out on defense.

The 6-4, 240-pound Texas commitment had a sack, six tackles and a quarterback hurry and impressed a national television audience with his speed and power in the West's 30-14 win against the East at the Alamodome in the 10th edition of this post-season All-Star high school football game.

Wilson had had 61 tackles (47 solo and 21 for loss), nine sacks, three forced fumbles and two fumble recoveries in the regular season.
