Back in their high school days, Caron Butler and Tony Romo shared the same basketball court, growing up in Wisconsin. They were two-fifths of the All-Racing County boys' basketball team in 1998. Butler averaged 24 points and 11 rebounds at Racine's Park High School. Romo averaged 24.3 points and 8.8 rebounds. "We actually did great against them," Butler said. "We were 2-0 against them." Butler was named a first-team All-State player. Romo was a third-team...

The Mavericks carry an eight-game winning streak into tonight's game against Minnesota at AAC, so it stands to reason that they have a little strut to their step right now. But it's only to a point, Shawn Marion said. "The attitude has always been good,'' he said after this morning's shootaround. "It's just the sense of urgency. And also when you get a swag going, it helps, too. Earlier in the season, when we were...

Rick Carlisle making sure Mavericks don't get complacent

Things are setting up quite nicely for the Mavericks here. They have the second-best record in the Western Conference, a half-game up on Denver. They play Minnesota tonight and the Wolves will be without Al Jefferson, who has been suspended for two games because of a DWI arrest. It follows a recent trend they've had when facing teams minus their best players - Miami (Dwayne Wade), Indiana (Danny Granger) and New Orleans (Chris Paul) -...

Dampier due to get unstitched

Erick Dampier is not yet on the verge of returning from finger surgery, but he is about to get the stitches out from the middle finger that was mangled enough to have bone sticking out of it when he was hurt on Feb. 16. After the stitches come out, he'll start to do some light basketball work. He did some very light dribbling and running Monday in Charlotte. Still looks like more than a week...

The last word on the win at Charlotte

It comes from Bobcats coach Larry Brown, who is always ready to put perspective on just about anything. In his postgame commentary, Brown was lavishing praise on the Mavericks for a hard-fought win. At least, it was hard-fought on one side, Brown said. "If I was scouting us, I'd wonder who was coaching that team,'' Brown said of his Bobcats. "We looked like an AAU team. If I'd paid to watch us tonight, I'd be...

Don't expect Mavericks to pursue anyone else

Eddie Sefko/Reporter    Bio |  E-mail  |  News tips

The thinking now is, with the Mavericks riding a nice winning streak and Erick Dampier's return getting closer by the day, that they will not pursue anybody that may become available on the waiver wire today or who has become available in the last few days. They are not expected to pursue anybody that would fit as "just another body'' at the end of the bench. Barring something crazy falling in their lap, they're going...

No Finley reunion in Dallas

The Mavericks aren't looking to add Michael Finley or anybody else, president Donnie Nelson said this afternoon. "We're not looking to make changes or additions at this point,'' he said. "In all likelihood, this is the group we'll go to battle with.'' --Eddie Sefko...

Dirk is NBA's best of the week, but did they get the wrong Mav?

Dirk Nowitzki has been honored as the Western Conference player of the week, but you have to wonder if he was even the player of the week on his own team. Might Jason Kidd have been a better choice? Nowitzki was honored for the second time this season (also Nov. 9-15) and for the 12th time in his career. He led the Mavericks (39-21 overall) to a 4-0 week with wins at home against Indiana,...

Jason Kidd: On the funniest Maverick, worst dresser and why playing more minutes is better

Dallas Mavericks guard Jason Kidd recently spoke to The Ben & Skin Show on ESPN Radio. Some highlights: On the funniest dude on the team: "Oh, there's no doubt -- Dirk Nowitzki . . . People don't really get to see Dirk but on the basketball court; but he's the biggest clown. He has a great personality. You got Dirk and Matt Carroll, those two are fighting for that No. 1 spot." On the worst...

Caron Butler's fourth-quarter steal a sign of in-game study

Lost, somewhat, amid Dirk Nowitzki's great fourth quarter and Darren Collison's eye-popping game, was the defensive play of the night turned in by Caron Butler. After Nowitzki put the Mavericks up 103-97 with a jumper in the lane, Butler poked the ball free from Collison for a steal with 51.9 seconds left. Butler missed the coast-to-coast layup, but Brendan Haywood was there for the follow-up dunk. The steal was part of a scouting report Butler...

Dirk Nowitzki bails out Mavericks' sloppy play

Todd Archer/Reporter    Bio |  E-mail  |  News tips

It looked like it was going to be an easy night for the Mavericks with an 83-58 lead midway through the third quarter, then everything sort of stopped for the Mavericks. Darren Collison got hot. So did Marcus Thornton. The Mavs started to turn the ball over, take quick shots and lost the rhythm they had in the first half. The other night New Orleans came back from an 18-point deficit to beat Orlando at...

Quick turnaround for the Mavs, winning streak on Monday

12:07 AM Mon, Mar 01, 2010 |  |
Todd Archer/Reporter    Bio |  E-mail  |  News tips

In about 18 hours, the Mavs will bring their seven-game winning streak to Charlotte to play the Bobcats. They are not expected to land in North Carolina until 3:45 a.m. and coach Rick Carlisle called it one of the "great challenges of the season." Instead of a breakfast meeting, the Mavericks will have a team meal in the afternoon and get on the bus for the arena. "Hey, you can look at it and whine...
