Intrasquad notes: Borbon off to races

2:13 PM Mon, Mar 01, 2010
Evan Grant/Blogger

SURPRISE, Ariz. - In the third inning, Julio Borbon demonstrated what kind of weapon he can be, by bunting a ball up the third base line for a one-out single. He stole second despite a pitchout when Taylor Teagarden's throw was high, then also stole third. Borbon has said he expects to steal at least 50 bases this season.

Intrasquad notes: Interpreting Feldman's inning

1:41 PM Mon, Mar 01, 2010
Evan Grant/Blogger

SURPRISE, Ariz. - You can look at Scott Feldman's inning of work two different ways. For the optimist, it took him just 10 pitches to retire three batters. For the pessimist, the four batters he faced in those 10 pitches comprised the heart of the Rangers order: Vladimir Guerrero (first pitch ground ball), Ian Kinsler (second pitch fly out), Nelson Cruz (singled after getting behind 0-and-2) and Chris Davis (first pitch ground ball)....

Evan Grant/Blogger

SURPRISE, Ariz. - It took C.J. Wilson 26 pitches to record three outs in his first inning of work as a starter Monday. Wilson recorded the first two outs on nine pitches, but then walked left-handed hitting David Murphy and Justin Smoak consecutively. He did end the inning by getting Taylor Teagarden to ground out to shortstop on a full-count breaking pitch. Wilson seemed to have trouble commanding his breaking ball - not unexpected at...

Mocking U: Rangers mock 2010 roster (V2.0)

7:00 AM Mon, Mar 01, 2010
Evan Grant/Blogger

SURPRISE, Ariz. - It became clear that Khalil Greene wouldn't be part of the Rangers plans before we ever posted last week's first mock roster, so we didn't have to account for that in Version Two. But is it possible for their to be movement without any further injuries and in the absence of any exhibition games? Hey, this is the mock roster world. Anything is possible.

11:42 AM Sun, Feb 28, 2010
Evan Grant/Blogger

The print product of the blog contained a column by some guy I know on the Rangers search for more team leadership. Meanwhile, our pals over at the Star-Telegram wrote about Scott Feldman's quest to be more than a one-year wonder.

Motivationally speaking: For Rangers third baseman Michael Young, his work is only half completed

6:49 AM Sun, Feb 28, 2010
Evan Grant/Blogger

SURPRISE, Ariz. - On September 1 last season, running out a routine ground ball, Michael Young suffered a strained left hamstring. It was significant not just because it took Young out of the Rangers' lineup as they tried to keep pace in the AL West. It was significant because it was the first injury that required him to miss considerable time.

Lazy Saturday afternoon notes: Addressing the middle infield hole on Rangers' bench

1:57 PM Sat, Feb 27, 2010
Evan Grant/Blogger

SURPRISE, Ariz. - The Rangers began an earnest examination of their internal bench candidates Saturday. Joaquin Arias, who hopes to win a spot as the utility infielder, did some early work with the infield instructors. Max Ramirez took the field for some one-on-one tutorial at first base. A catcher, he's trying to add first to his resume and become the right-handed bench power bat.

Evan Grant/Blogger

SURPRISE, Ariz. - RHP Warner Madrigal cut short his throwing session Friday with tightness in his right forearm area. The Rangers believe the problem is muscular rather than structural. He will be re-evaluated on Saturday. Madrigal pitched in 12 games in the Dominican Winter League, but stopped in December.
