Know What to Do About the Flu
Influenza (the flu) is a contagious respiratory illness caused by influenza viruses. It can cause mild to severe illness, and at times can lead to death. The best ways to prevent the flu is by getting a flu vaccination each year and practice good hand washing hygiene. Every year in the United States, on average 5% to 20% of the population gets the flu; more than 200,000 people are hospitalized from flu complications and; about 36,000 people die from flu-related causes.  Storm Drainage Utility
On February 24th City Council held public hearings to begin creation
of a new utility for Storm Drainage. This process began in 1995 and was the
result of unfunded federal mandates. The new utility results in a new item on Hurst utility bills: Storm Drainage Fee. The rate for residents is $4 per home water meter. This is equivalent to $1.93 per apartment unit and $1.19 per 1000 impervious square feet for commercial properties. For questions about the new utility, please call 817.788.7004. This is a dedicated number for Storm Drainage Utility inquiries. This new utility will help pay for water quality testing in streams, additional maintenance of waterways, more storm drainage construction projects, more erosion control projects and computer software for tracking more detailed permits and work order management.  Transforming Hurst: A Vision for the Future
In 1999, the City Council held their first Strategic Planning Session that focused on identifying a City of Hurst Mission Statement, Policy Statements and Strategic Objectives that would guide the City over the next 10 to 20 years. One key component of the Strategic Plan was to promote comprehensive revitalization and redevelopment programs that would include mixed-use development and upgrades and improvements to Pipeline Road, Bedford-Euless Road, Hwy. 10, and Hurst Town Center.  Shop First in Hurst
“Shop First in Hurst” is more than just a catchy phrase. It’s our mantra at the City of Hurst. We continually encourage residents to support our local businesses. With so much to offer in Hurst, why shop anywhere else? We showcase our wide variety of businesses each year in our Restaurant, Retail and Business Guide. Every mailbox in Hurst can anticipate the arrival or this annual guide, complete with addresses and phone numbers of each business in Hurst. We publish the guide at no cost to businesses. The guide is also available online with the most up-to-date information or call 817.788.7094 for additional copies.
Remember the "Four D's" to defend against West Nile virus 
- DUSK / DAWN are the times of day you should try to stay indoors. This is when infected mosquitoes are most active.
- DRESS in light-colored long sleeves and pants when you're outside. For extra protection you may want to spray thin clothing with repellent.
- DEET is an ingredient to look for in your insect repellent. Follow label instructions, and always wear repellent when outdoors.
- DRAIN standing water in your backyard and neighborhood - bird baths, old tires, flowerpots, and clogged rain gutters.
These are mosquito breeding sites.
The Joe Watson Scholarship Fund, a component fund of the Community Foundation of North Texas, may award one or more scholarships for a minimum of $2,000 each year to a graduating senior who is a resident of the
City of Hurst, Texas or a current participant in the HEBISD Criminal Justice Program or a child of a City of Hurst police officer. Students who are awarded the scholarship may re-apply in each of the three succeeding years for an additional scholarship of $2,000 per year if they meet the re-application criteria.
