City's one day trash pick-up website swamped, but the garbage is getting collected

Mary Nix, Dallas's director of Sanitation Services, reports that the first day of once weekly trash and recycling pick-up has been largely smooth.

Most people seem to be getting it and had their blue and gray cans on the curb this morning, she said.

But not everybody was sure, apparently, whether their one day had finally come.

The city's onedaydallas.com website has been overwhelmed for much of the morning, apparently with people trying to find out whether today is their day.

Nix said not to worry. If your trash didn't get picked up today, call 311 and the trucks will swing by tomorrow.

The city will give you a second chance for pick-up for a couple of weeks while people adjust to the new system, Nix said.

Also, many people whose service moved from the alley to the curb remain concerned about the change. The city is working with them on a case by case basis, Nix said.

Meanwhile, City Hall had about 140 garbage trucks on the street today to service 60,000 homes.

What was your one day experience?

Darren Reagan, leader of the Black State Employees Association of Texas, to be sentenced to federal prison today

Today, Darren Reagan, the former leader (and one of the few members) of the Black State Employees Association of Texas, will be sentenced for his role as bagman in the Don Hill corruption affair.

Reagan once was known around town for using BSEAT to stage protests nominally aimed at helping minority employees get fair treatment.

The Justice Department more or less dubbed it a shakedown operation in the Hill indictment.

Reagan's former friend and BSEAT co-hort Allen McGill pleaded guilty in the case. McGill's wife, Gail Terrell, was also a BSEAT leader. She was not charged in the Hill case and remains council member Tennell Atkins' appointee to the city of Dallas' Park and Recreation Board.

Your daily dose of news and views from in and around Dallas City Hall:

The Don Hill saga is over for Dallas City Hall after Friday's sentencing. What it will all mean to 1500 Marilla as time goes by remains to be seen.

Two City Council committees will be be meeting today.

First, the public safety committee will be heading to the deep basement of City Hall for a tour of Kenny Shaw's Emergency Operations Center. Been there a few times myself and can vouch it's cool.

The committee will also get word on plans to update Fair Park's Firefighter Museum.

The council's Housing committee will also be getting together, mainly to talk about the use of stimulus funds.

One of the topics will be millions of dollars in grants for weatherizing homes of the poor.

Our Jim Drew looked at this from a statewide perspective a few months ago and made some very interesting findings.

The Landmark commission will discuss installation of a 5,000 square foot greenhouse at Fair Park.

And finally today, the board members of Lucy Billingsley's Cypress Waters Municipal Management district will get together for some swearing and oaths.

Oh yes, and they will be calling for bond and tax elections for Cypress Waters, which I believe mark the first municipal bond and tax elections for a private entity in Dallas (historians, bond traders and/or tax collectors out there correct me if I'm wrong).

UPDATE: As of 5 p.m., the hearing was still ongoing. Click here for Trahan's latest update.
-----------------------------------------------------

Our federal courts reporter Jason Trahan is covering the sentencings of former Dallas Mayor Pro Tem Don Hill and two others convicted last year of bribery and extortion.

His last update came just after they recessed for lunch:

Judging from the pace this morning, I'm not sure we're even halfway through this hearing, which means it could be several more hours before we find out how much prison time the trio will receive. If they finish today.

Former Dallas Mayor Pro Tem Don Hill and two others convicted last year of bribery and extortion will be sentenced this morning for their part in the massive City Hall corruption investigation that began more than five years ago. Check out our federal courts reporter Jason Trahan's story here.

One of the snowiest winters in history has left streets pockmarked throughout the city. Check out the front page story here.

After years of limited dining and retail options at Dallas Love Field, city officials released ambitious plans this week for an expanded menu as part of the airport's $519 million overhaul. Check out our business writer Tom Benning's report here.

Mail ballots could be a key element in the campaign to persuade District 100 voters to choose disgraced Rep. Terri Hodge on Tuesday. She can no longer serve in the Legislature because of her guilty plea to tax evasion earlier this month. Read our political writer Gromer Jeffers' report here.

Many Dallas police officers are riled by an arrest warrant issued Thursday for a fellow officer who is accused of illegally pointing his gun at a man and ordering him to his knees during an off-duty confrontation in July. Read our police reporter Tanya Eiserer's report here.

Mayor Tom Leppert slips into Fort Worth for state of that city's address

5:09 PM Thu, Feb 25, 2010 |
Rudolph Bush/Reporter    Bio |  E-mail  |  News tips

Thumbnail image for tomleppertmug3.JPG

Our Jeff Mosier reports: The Fort Worth Convention Center was packed with the usual assortment of Tarrant County public officials and business leaders for Mayor Mike Moncrief's State of the City Address Thursday. One surprise in the audience though was Dallas Mayor Tom Leppert.

Perhaps this is another sign of the friendlier relationship between the two cities. On and off, there has been a low-level dislike between many of the city leaders or at least a healthy dose of disinterest.

The best known example was the late Fort Worth Star-Telegram publisher Amon G. Carter. As legend goes, he would take a brown bag lunch with him when he went to Dallas so he wouldn't have to spend money there.

The cities have also butted heads periodically about the Wright Amendment and other regional issues. Even in recent years, some members of the mostly collegial Fort Worth City Council would gloat a bit when the Dallas City Council was in turmoil.

Since the announcement of the 2011 Super Bowl, Leppert, Moncrief and Arlington Mayor Robert Cluck have developed closer relationships. It's not even a surprise to see some hugs exchanged when they've met for Super Bowl related events.
