There's plenty of area talent in Austin this weekend. Mansfield Timberview has Maegan Conwright. Cedar Hill has Diara Moore, the Blakely's and BreAnna Dawkins. Frisco Wakeland has Haley Texada and Jackie Patterson. But here's a column about wishing for more. Earlier today, Matt Wixon wrote a blog about how Irving MacArthur and Skyline both wanted to make it to state badly. Neither did. And without them, it means talented, fun-to-watch players like Odyssey Sims, Alexis...
Few people would have guessed Wakeland would still be alive, that the Wolverines would make it to the state tournament in Austin. This is especially true considering that teams like Rockwall and Frisco didn't make it. But really, Wakeland proved again and again that it belonged with the best teams in the state. It beat Frisco in the eary part of the year, and despite a late cold spell, finished second in one of the...
So we know Highland Park won. And we know Southlake Carroll came so darn close on the boys and girls side. But let's face it, Saturday was a big day full of individual champions, valiant team performances and so on that all deserved recognition. Problem is, we don't have too much room in the paper. So here's a few thoughts and highlights that didn't get ample coverage. The Frisco girls: Yeah, they came really close....
Another good matchup to check out tonight is the 6:30 p.m. regional quarterfinal between Lincoln and Pinkston at Ellis Davis Field House. Lincoln (27-3) has won 10 straight and Pinkston (23-9) has a five-game winning streak. Last season, Lincoln rolled to a 74-50 victory over Pinkston in the first round of the 4A playoffs. Tony Mitchell, a 6-8 senior forward who averages 20.5 points and 13.2 rebounds per game, will try to help Pinkston get...
Here's a great setup for fans tonight: One gym and two excellent playoff matchups. At Allen, Jesuit (27-5) will take on Flower Mound Marcus (34-2) at 6:30. Both those teams like to get up and down the court, so it should be very entertaining. Marcus is coming off a 54-51 win over Duncanville and Jesuit advanced with a 73-46 win over Hurst L.D. Bell. After that game, Lewisville (20-12) will take on Plano West (23-8)....
From the day official basketball practices began for the Irving MacArthur and Skyline girls -- way back in October -- the two teams shared the goal of the state tournament. But neither will be in Austin this week. In 5A, Cedar Hill will be the lone representative from the Dallas area. Congratulations to the Lady Longhorns, who knocked off Irving MacArthur in the Region I championship on Saturday. Cedar Hill hadn't made it to the...
The Dallas-Fort Worth area has always had strong wrestling programs, headlined for many years by Highland Park. Guided by coach Tim Marzuola, the Scots won five UIL titles in the eight-season span from 1999 to 2006. Marzuola retired in 2007 after a 25-year run at Highland Park. The UIL wrestling champ in 2007 was Katy Cinco Ranch and in 2008 and '09, Canyon Randall won it. But this year, Allen brought the title back to... February 28, 2010

Congratulations to the Prestonwood Christian Lions for winning the TAPPS 5A boys basketball state title. Prestonwood beat defending champ and district rival TCA-Addison, 50-45, Saturday at Mansfield Summit. Remember, TCA-Addison beat Prestonwood in last year's state final. For about 25 of the 32 minutes, it looked as though TCA-Addison would repeat as champion, but there was something about Prestonwood that made you never count it out. The Lions were scoring in the fourth quarter, and... February 27, 2010
Another TAPPS basketball state tournament has come and gone, and Bishop Lynch is the girls 5A champion. Surprise, surprise. Lynch won its ninth consecutive TAPPS state title and 27th overall Saturday against Fort Worth Nolan. How many sports on any level can say they boast a nine-time champion? Truth be told, this could have been the Friars' most difficult title run. Remember, Nolan beat Lynch earlier in the season, so there was anxiety to go...
8:15 - OK, sorry for the long time between updates but it got a little hectic. And more hecticness (is that a word) is happening right now in that I have to leave the natatorium or they will lock me in. So, I'll be short... The Southlake Carroll boys finished second overall in the 5A team standings. On the girls' side, the Dragons finished third overall. Going into the final event, the girls had a...
GARLAND - The victory from the night before still fresh in her mind, Frisco Wakeland coach Darilyn Krempin was overcome by adrenaline and sheer joy. But the thrill of ousting defending state champion Waco Midway on Friday was eventually replaced with concern over what came next: A showdown Saturday with familiar foe McKinney North in the Class 4A Region II final at the Garland Special Events Center. Would her team be tired? Would it be...
Irving MacArthur All-American guard Odyssey Sims left the game against Cedar Hill today 13 seconds into the first quarter. She appeared to injure her right knee. After Cedar Hill won, 67-60, to advance to state, Sims came out of the locker room on crutches, flanked by her parents. Sims' mother said that she hyperextended her right hamstring. The MacArthur coach said that Sims thought it was an ACL injury while she was on the bench,...
Cedar Hill is on its way to the Class 5A state girls basketball tournament. Cedar Hill beat Irving MacArthur, 67-60, in this Class 5A Region I final in Fort Worth. Cedar Hill is celebrating its state-title berth now at mid-court with screaming fans cheering them on. Odyssey Sims was hurt 13 seconds into the game for MacArthur and didn't score. Alexis Jones, MacArthur's standout sophomore guard who scored 26 points, just stopped trying on offense... |
