Kayaking and Trinity Levee Run this Saturday at Trammell Crow Park

Perhaps you're sick of all this cold, wet weather.

For a little summer warm-up, head out Saturday morning to Trammell Crow Park near the raging Trinity. There you can learn about kayaks and partake of a free kayak obstacle course in the park lake.

Free. Kayaks and instruction provided. Time: 9:30 a.m. to noon.

"We want people to get a little exposure to water sports in the area," said Judy Schmidt, a spokeswoman for the Trinity River Corridor Project.

"We know the weather's crazy," she said. The forecast now calls for a chance of rain Saturday with a high temperature in the mid-60s.

"Everything is provided. Everything is free," Schmidt said. "All you have to do is dress for it."

Call 214-671-9500 for more information.

Trrammell Crow Park, 3700 Sylvan, will also be the scene Saturday for the sixth-annual Trinity River Levee 10K run and two-mile Fun Run/Walk.

The action begins at 9 a.m. Sponsored by the Dallas Running Club. Click here for more information.

Loss of pergola project would be a 'slap in the face'; Neumann: No decision yet

We met Wednesday with David Klempin, Barbara Barbee and nine other folks at the Kiest Park garden and water rill to talk about the missing piece -- the pergola.

Pergola--Kemplin (Small).jpg

Perhaps you've heard that the Friends of Oak Cliff Parks and others are a bit puzzled and perturbed -- if not downright chapped -- that council member Dave Neumann is thinking about diverting bond funds for a proposed rebuilding of the stone-columned arbor to improving Kiest Park trails.

Barbee and Klempin estimate the Friends group has donated more than 20,000 volunteer hours and secured more than $150,000 in plants and cash for Oak Cliff's parks, primarily Kiest, Lake Cliff, Founders and Kidd Springs.

They point out how they revived the Kiest garden and rill at Kiest and pressed for bond funding for a pergola reconstruction. And jerking away the money, would be, as Barbee put it, "a slap in the face of the Friends of Oak Cliff Parks." Klempin: "It's unacceptable."

Former City Council member Ed Oakley told us he had funding for rebuilding the pergola added to the 2006 bond program. He believes that money should stay put. But the city, as it can, has lumped the pergola and trail improvements together as an estimated $2 million project.

Neumann told us he hasn't decided how that money should be spent. He says he's listening to the people and that many are saying they want the Kiest trails fixed.

Oak Cliff's vigor and spunk: Some sources and observations

8:23 AM Thu, Feb 25, 2010 |

A tip o the hat to the Observer's Jim Schutze for this look at some of the leaders and attitudes and issues in Oak Cliff.

The energy and entrepreneurial spirit is surely remarkable there across the raging river. And we hope Mr. Schutze won't take offense if we call out a few other notable players in this rich story of community vigor and spunk.

For example, there's the Oak Cliff Society of Fine Arts, owners of the historic Turner House. The society will continue contributing to the cultural mix in Oak Cliff and the other Dallas with its spring Salon Series, which gets under way tonight at the Turner House, 401 N. Rosemont.

Council backs two Oak Cliff senior apartment projects

Two low-income senior apartment projects in Oak Cliff received key City Council endorsements Wednesday.

The council supported developers' applications for housing tax credits for:

* A proposed 140-unit complex at 1500 S. Zang Blvd. near the Wynnewood Shopping Center.

* A proposed 130-unit project at 32 Pinnacle Park Blvd.

A tax-credit application for a 172-unit complex at 1400 Englewood Drive in the Oak Cliff Gateway area was rejected.

The council action was a crucial yet preliminary step toward increasing Oak Cliff's supply of affordable housing.

So how about this drive to turn Oak Cliff, all of Dallas 'wet'

1:50 PM Tue, Feb 23, 2010 |
Roy Appleton/Reporter    Bio |  E-mail  |  News tips

What do you think about this move toward the sale of beer and wine at retail stores throughout Oak Cliff and the other Dallas?

How about this talk of eliminating the "private club" silliness at restaurants?

Kroger, Wal-Mart, the Greater Dallas Restaurant Association and other groups are leading the charge. Word is they need to collect 68,000 valid signatures in 60 days. The drive will begin in mid-March. And if it's successful, if voters say Cheers, Oak Cliff would be "wet" for the first time in 54 years.

Roy Appleton/Reporter    Bio |  E-mail  |  News tips

The serving has begun at 48 nights, a restaurant like no other in Dallas.

It will be open for the next 24 weeks, on Monday and Tuesday nights, at 1808 Sylvan Ave. Suite 101 near Interstate 30.

Each week will bring some of the city's leading chefs and their menus to the 30-seat restaurant. There will be two nightly seatings (at 6:30 and 8:30). A four-course meal (tax and valet included, BYOB) costs $75 with a complimentary reception of hors d'oevres, beer and wine 30 minutes before each seating.

And proceeds after utility costs will benefit the Mass Care Task Force and its work to improve the area's disaster preparedness. The task force is a collaboration of the Salvation Army, Red Cross, North Texas Food Bank and Volunteer Center of North Texas.

It's the brainchild of Bolsa restaurant owners Christopher Jeffers and Chris Zielke and chef Tim Byres, their partner at Smoke.

Reservations are required. Tickets must be purchased in advance. Click here are loads o information.

In time the building and surrounding structures will be razed for the Sylvan Thirty retail and residential development.

Donations sought for Seventh Street mural project

2:18 PM Mon, Feb 22, 2010 |

ray mel mural proposal (Small).jpg
concept01-middlesized (Small).jpgThe artists have been selected, as have the walls.

Now, as the donations come in, murals will bloom along Seventh Street in North Oak Cliff.

Eleven 11 Oak Cliff artists will participate in what organizers hope will be the first round of a project to lively up Seventh from the Bishop Arts District west to Rosemont.

They want to make the street a visually exciting, bicycle- and pedestrian-friendly corridor. And they plan to begin unveiling the vision at the second-annual Oak Cliff Art Crawl, April 10-11.

Besides art, the weekend events will include music at the Kessler Theater, the Urban Bazaar in Bishop Arts, Bolsa's outdoor market and "The Perfect Block" installation at Tyler and Seventh. Plenty more to come...

Amy Cowan told us this p.m. that $6,100 has been raised toward a goal of $25,000. The money will cover paint and materials, building prep and a "small fee" to the artists, she wrote in an e-mail. Donate $500 to $2,499 and get your name painted on a wall -- your portrait or company logo for $2,500 or more.

The creativity should commence in a couple of weeks, Steve Cruz, owner/director of Mighty Fine Arts told us. And by Crawl time, many if not all of the works should be in place -- that's the fund-raisers' goal.

To contribute, click here for the form and/or call 214-862-6556.

Mural designs by Ray-Mel Cornelius (top), behind 732 W. Davis and Kevin Obregon behind 1300 W. Davis.
