Jason Witten to team up with USO this off-season

11:58 AM Thu, Feb 25, 2010 |  |
Todd Archer/Reporter    Bio |  E-mail  |  News tips

Jason Witten will be spending part of his off-season in Southwest Asia as part of the NFL-USO tradition that started more than 40 years ago. Witten will be joined by fellow Pro Bowlers Vernon Davis (San Francisco), Joe Thomas (Cleveland) and Mario Williams (Houston) for the weeklong visit to the U.S. troops at military bases throughout the region. I'll try to reach Witten today for his comments on visiting the troops, but I have to...

One option to keep Miles Austin with Cowboys ends today

10:46 AM Thu, Feb 25, 2010 |  |
Todd Davis/Editor    Bio |  E-mail  |  News tips

Jerry Jones has said he wants Miles Austin to remain with the Dallas Cowboys. Miles Austin has said he wants to remain with the Dallas Cowboys. Today we find out if the Dallas Cowboys want to make that happen via the 2010 franchise tag. Executive vice president Stephen Jones is on record as saying he won't do that, but it's one way to keep Austin in Dallas. NFL teams have until 3 p.m. today to...

Happy rebirthday, Dallas Cowboys!

8:37 AM Thu, Feb 25, 2010 |  |
Todd Davis/Editor    Bio |  E-mail  |  News tips

If January 28, 1960, the day the NFL granted an expansion franchise to Dallas, is the birthday of the Dallas Cowboys, today is the rebirthday of the Cowboys. On Feb. 25, 1989, Jerry Jones bought the Cowboys and fired Tom Landry. Here is the story from the next day's sports section. The move to fire Tom Landry had this kind of reaction: "This is like Lombardi's death," National Football League commissioner Pete Rozelle said from...

South Florida prosecutors won't file rape charges against Michael Irvin

8:04 PM Wed, Feb 24, 2010 |  |
Rob Stroope/Editor    Bio |  E-mail  |  News tips

South Florida prosecutors said Wednesday that they would not file rape charges against former Cowboy Michael Irvin. A woman filed a lawsuit Feb. 4 in Broward County Circuit Court seeking unspecified damages for a sexual assault that allegedly occurred July 4 or 5, 2007, at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Hollywood....

Jerry Jones' reaction to Hall of Fame Game

5:12 PM Wed, Feb 24, 2010 |  |
Todd Archer/Reporter    Bio |  E-mail  |  News tips

The Cowboys have passed on a quote from owner and general manager Jerry Jones regarding the Hall of Fame Game: "It's always an honor to be selected to play in this game." "More importantly, I really believe that having our players share in Emmitt Smith's Hall of Fame enshrinement should serve as an inspiration to every man on our roster, whether it be a 10-year vet or a rookie that's never played in an NFL...

Helping the Cowboys split their training camps

5:04 PM Wed, Feb 24, 2010 |  |
Todd Archer/Reporter    Bio |  E-mail  |  News tips

Does an appearance in the Hall of Fame Game mean the Cowboys will definitely be splitting time between the Alamodome and Oxnard, Calif., for training camp? Not necessarily but it definitely helps the cause. The Cowboys still need to find a West Coast partner for a pre-season game to make it happen. I have a feeling the California teams would like an appearance by the Cowboys to help at least a little with ticket sales....

More Hall of Fame Game nuggets

4:56 PM Wed, Feb 24, 2010 |  |
Todd Archer/Reporter    Bio |  E-mail  |  News tips

Some other tidbits regarding the Cowboys' inclusion in the Hall of Fame Game: ** The Cowboys will get the chance to see old friend Mike Zimmer, the Bengals defensive coordinator. Zimmer was a Cowboys' assistant from 1994-2006, serving as the coordinator from 2000-06. He signed an extension to stay with Cincinnati after his defense put together a solid 2009 season. ** Other former Cowboys could be on hand too: Safety Roy Williams and defensive tackle...

Hall of Fame Game = Cowboys playoffs in 2010

4:39 PM Wed, Feb 24, 2010 |  |
Todd Archer/Reporter    Bio |  E-mail  |  News tips

The Cowboys will be playing in the Hall of Fame Game for the fourth time in franchise history and for the first time since 1999 when their game against Cleveland went to overtime. How bad was that, a preseason game in overtime? History might be on the Cowboys side. The Cowboys have lost their previous three meetings in the Hall of Fame Game, but they went on to reach the playoffs in 1999 (finishing 8-8),...

Cowboys to play Bengals in Hall of Fame Game

3:58 PM Wed, Feb 24, 2010 |  |
Chuck Grimes/Editor    Bio |  E-mail  |  News tips

Emmitt Smith will be inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in August. The Cowboys will be there to celebrate. The 2010 NFL season will begin with the Dallas Cowboys facing the Cincinnati Bengals in the annual Hall of Fame game at Canton, Ohio, on Aug. 8. It will be shown on NBC (Ch. 5 in Dallas-Fort Worth area). Cowboys owner-general manager Jerry Jones had lobbied for his team to be involved in the...

Archer: Deon Anderson still with Dallas Cowboys

3:56 PM Wed, Feb 24, 2010 |  |
Todd Davis/Editor    Bio |  E-mail  |  News tips

In a chat today, Dallas Cowboys blogger Todd Archer was asked about the current status of running back Deon Anderson. "He's still on the team. They have to wait for the legal process to play out. Even if he is cleared he could face some penalty from the league for violating the personal conduct policy."...

How much can Chris Boniol help Cowboys kickers?

2:38 PM Wed, Feb 24, 2010 |  |
Todd Archer/Reporter    Bio |  E-mail  |  News tips

We're going kicker heavy here on the Cowboys blog after Gerry's post because I had another tidbit left over from a conversation I had with Chris Boniol on Tuesday. From 1989-2004, Steve Hoffman was in charge of the Cowboys' kickers. He found them here, there and everywhere, including Boniol. He was let go in 2004 by Bill Parcells but interestingly Parcells kept him for a year in Miami and he had a rookie, Dan Carpenter,...

The Boniol-Tiffin connection

12:04 PM Wed, Feb 24, 2010 |  |
Gerry Fraley/Reporter    Bio |  E-mail  |  News tips

With Chris Boniol added as a kicking consultant, do not be surprised if the Dallas Cowboys use a draft choice on kicker Leigh Tiffin of Alabama. Boniol directs kicking camps and lists Tiffin among his top students. Tiffin led the NCAA with 30 field goals last season and showed leg strength, making 4-of-6 tries from 48-plus yards. Tiffin also held up under pressure. He made four kicks in a 12-10 win over Tennessee that kept...

Cowboys can use pass rushers but not Julius Peppers

10:40 AM Wed, Feb 24, 2010 |  |
Todd Archer/Reporter    Bio |  E-mail  |  News tips

I heard one of the analysts on an ESPN morning talk show tell us to watch out for Dallas being interested in free-agent defensive end Julius Peppers. Immediately I shook my head. Why would the Cowboys want or even need Peppers? If he would want to come in as a third-down pass rush specialist, sure, take him. That's never going to happen ever. Peppers is looking for a DeMarcus Ware-type contract with $40 million-ish guaranteed,...
