The DMN's Eric Aasen wrote an interesting feature published today about the sacrifices local teenager Ashley Cain and 20-something Joshua Reagan have made to pursue their dreams of becoming an Olympic figure skater. Here is an excerpt: The intense schedule meant she had to withdraw from school. Now, she's home-schooled. She studied algebra during breaks at last month's championships. Ashley sacrifices her time - and the life of a typical teenager - in order to...
Matt Donovan's connection to Coppell isn't exactly strong. He's originally from Oklahoma, where he has spent most of his life. But as a teenager, he moved to there to attend high school and play Midget AAA for the Dallas Stars. Donovan, 19, was on the USA hockey team that won the gold medal at the World Junior Championships. The Oklahoman's Jenni Carlson caught up with Donovan, who is a freshman defenseman at the University of...
The Waxahachie girls took down Longview on Wednesday night, 48-37. Longview was the ninth-ranked team in the state and a district champ, while Waxahachie was the fourth-place team in 16-4A, so call it an upset. But it wasn't a big one. District 16-4A is loaded with good girls basketball teams, and Waxahachie has a nice tradition in girls hoops, including a 4A state title in 2006. Hachie's 24-10 record might not impress a lot of...
You're probably used to seeing old-school NFL films of teams like the Bears and Packers waging war against each other in heavy snow and single-digit temperatures. Well, Dallas-area schools like Denton Ryan have encountered those kind of conditions this offseason during a historically wet winter for North Texas. The snow and frigid temperature have also caused some disruptions in players' workouts. "I think the most unusual part about this year is that we've had more...
The Texas football recruiting machine continued to roll on today. Just before lunch, the Longhorns secured oral commitment No. 15 for their 2011 class in Galena Park North Shore offensive lineman Sedrick Flowers. Texas now has pledges from four of the state's top five prospects in 2011. Flowers is Texas' fourth offensive linemen to commit. On Tuesday, Daingerfield outside linebacker Steve Edmond became commitment No. 14 for the Longhorns' 2011 class. The first 13 came...
Our friends at Fox Sports Southwest aired some clips on their High School Spotlight show this week from Dallas-area athletes' signing day ceremonies. Check out footage of the day showing players like Southlake Carroll's Jackson Richards, F-W Dunbar's Darius White and Skyline's Corey Nelson. Click here to the see video....
Last year, Lake Highlands' Isaac Grieder finished the season 53-1 and won the UIL state title at 160 pounds. Now a senior, Grieder is back to defend his title and could finish the season with an unblemished record. He'll begin working his way through the bracket Friday with a record of 55-0. Here are the other area wrestlers who will finish the season undefeated if they win state titles Saturday at the Delco Center in... February 24, 2010
There are some good area-round matchups in the boys 5A bracket, and one of the best could be Duncanville (22-12) taking on Flower Mound Marcus (33-2). Duncanville isn't the team it was in recent years, with the likes of Shawn Williams and Roger Franklin, but the Panthers still have talent. They also have one very big guy in 6-11 Baylor commit Perry Jones, who was recently named a McDonald's All-American. He'll be even bigger against...
Friday night, the Mansfield Summit and Irving MacArthur girls meet again for a spot in the 5A Region I championship. Last year Summit beat MacArthur, 63-59, on its way to the 5A championship. Summit had to beat a pair of powers at the state tournament -- defending champion Houston Cy-Fair in the semis and Houston Nimitz, with 6-8 center Brittney Griner, in the championship. But Summit won those games by 10 and 11 points, and...

Yes, I'm kidding. We would need snow, of course. And a really big insurance policy for the potential ABC Wide World of Sports "Agony of Defeat." But here's a story of a teenager whose daredevil nature has earned him more than acclaim on Youtube: 17-year-old Peter Frenette is at the Olympics....
Denton Ryan's Scotty Young is back in his comfort zone. Now that the drama of recruiting and signing day is three weeks old, the low-key Young isn't doing daily interviews or thinking about where he's going to college. Instead, he's back to a more normal routine as he's practicing with the Raiders' baseball team. You can read more here about Young's decision to play football at Texas Tech over playing baseball elsewhere. Below is also...
Before Odyssey Sims scored 40 points and helped Irving MacArthur defeat rival Duncanville 68-57 in the Class 5A Region I quarterfinal, the Cardinals were ranked eighth in USA Today's national high school poll. Irving MacArthur has only lost once in 37 games and is a favorite to win the state title. Here are the rankings....
Note to teams facing Rowlett: Be afraid of Rowlett as an underdog. No matter what the sport. As Damon Sayles pointed out earlier, there were a lot of near upsets in the first round of the boys basketball playoffs. One that did happen was Rowlett, the fourth-place finisher in District 10-5A, knocking off 9-5A champion Richardson Berkner. Rowlett's Parker Lutz scored 18 and Greg Ardister had 16 to help Rowlett pull the upset. And, as... |
