Should the Stars trade Steve Ott??

Mike Heika/Reporter    Bio |  E-mail  |  News tips

Steve Ott is still trying to recover from appendectomy surgery, and had a small setback last week. However, he skated yesterday, hopes to work slowly into the Stars' mini-camp that starts Friday, and said he is planning on being on the ice for the March 2 game against the Kings at American Airlines Center. But there are a couple of things that could get in the way. One, his conditioning might not be up to...

The Hockey news' Ryan Kennedy puts Richard Bachman on his list of top 10 players he would like to see in the NHL. And InGoal Magazine discusses Stars goalie prospects with Mike Valley here. Here's Defending Big D's look at the Texas Stars. Here is Andrew's Dallas Stars Page's look at the minor league affiliates. And here is their look at the prospects....

USA vs. Finland; Canada vs. Slovakia

Sweden and Loui Eriksson were eliminated late Wednesday (early Thursday here) in a 4-3 loss to Slovakia. That means Canada (which steamrolled Russia 7-3) will face Slovakia in the semifinals on Friday. Jean-Jacques Taylor is there and had this column on Brenden Morrow's role in the win. By the way, how are Sharks fans feeling today about their playoff hopes after Evgeni Nabokov gave up six goals for Russia before being pulled? Slovakia is a...

Auld on waivers, Turco expected to stay

Mike Heika/Reporter    Bio |  E-mail  |  News tips

THURSDAY UPDATE: Auld has cleared waivers on Thursday and will be assigned to the Texas Stars. My guess is he will be placed on recall waivers and the Stars will hope that he gets picked up and they will split his remaining $250,000 in salary with the team that picks him up. If he is not picked up, he will be assigned to the Texas Stars and will probably play there. The Stars today placed...

Wednesday Olympic update

7:44 AM Wed, Feb 24, 2010 |  |
Mike Heika/Reporter    Bio |  E-mail  |  News tips

Can we call this Super Wednesday? It's not quite, but there are some interesting games out there today. Switzerland had to go to a shootout to advance past Belarus on Tuesday, and now will meet the good ol' USofA today at 2 p.m. on NBC. Switzerland hung in against the United States, 3-1, in pool play, and Ducks goalie Jonas Hiller has been great in the tournament so far, so this is by no means...

Nieuwendyk: Canada plays its best in desperate times

2:27 PM Tue, Feb 23, 2010 |  |
Mike Heika/Reporter    Bio |  E-mail  |  News tips

Stars GM Joe Nieuwendyk was part of Team Canada at the Olympics in 2002, and he knows all about panic. His team lost to Sweden, 5-2, tied the Czech Republic, 3-3, and barely beat Germany, 3-2, in pool play. The country was concerned, to put it mildly, but Canada was able to get things together and win the gold medal in Salt Lake City. ``I do remember that we worked into it very slowly, and...

How big is this win for Team USA?

8:12 AM Mon, Feb 22, 2010 |  |
Mike Heika/Reporter    Bio |  E-mail  |  News tips

After its 5-3 win over Canada Sunday, Team USA is the top-seeded team in the Olympic tournament. It will get the day off today, get a bye on Tuesday and then on Wednesday play the winner of the Switzerland-Belarus game. Canada, meanwhile, has to play Germany on Tuesday for a chance to play Russia on Wednesday in the quarterfinals. Talk about decidedly different paths. Check out the bracket at the bottom of the entry here...

Super Sunday

Mike Heika/Reporter    Bio |  E-mail  |  News tips

We'll start a new thread for Super Sunday, just because there is so much hype surrounding it. Here's the NHL's take on it. Here's TSN's take. ESPN breaks down USA-Canada here. Here's how USA Today looks at it. All three games feature huge rivalries as Russia will face the Czech Republic at 2 p.m. (NBC), USA will face Canada at 6:45 p.m. (MSNBC) and Sweden will take on Finland at 10:55 p.m. (MSNBC). The reason...

Olympic discussion

8:41 AM Wed, Feb 17, 2010 |  |
Mike Heika/Reporter    Bio |  E-mail  |  News tips

I'm running errands this week and catching up on a lot of things, so I didn't feel like I could have an ongoing chat about Olympic games. But that doesn't mean we can't have an Olympic discussion thread. You guys get to steer the discussion in this one, and I'll probably just bump this thread up every day during pool play. Here is the schedule. It was more of a standard fare day on Friday...

Wednesday tidbits

Mike Heika/Reporter    Bio |  E-mail  |  News tips

First of all, Brandon Worley over at Defending Big D does an incredible job of scouting and breaking down the game of new goalie Kari Lehtonen. It will be very interesting for fans to try to go through this transition into a new era, as Lehtonen is completely different than Marty Turco in his approach to the game. Next, Mark Stepneski at Andrew's Dallas Stars Page has his weekly prospect update. Scott Glennie is the...
