NBC is pleased as punch with the gigantic cable rating the USA-Canada game got for MSNBC on Sunday night, The 8.2 million viewers the network got is second only to its election night coverage in 2008. It has no misgivings about going with taped skiing and ice dancing on over-the-air NBC. "You do know that 53 percent of the Olympic audience is women," one NBC wag told me. The network has volumes of research information indicating that it's audience, which is not a hardcore sports audience, prefers sequins to slap shots. And I'll just point this out (and I hate to defend NBC): The network's job is not to grow the NHL. The reason the NHL is on NBC for no rights fee is because it could not get a better over-the-air deal anywhere else. Would there have been as much bellyaching if the game was on cable's ESPN, which also is not in as many homes as NBC? The network also made the game available in HD. No HD? Blame the cable carrier. Those of us who watched hockey were treated to a lifetime memory. Go discuss.

I didn't get to watch Big Monday on ESPN last night as I was wrapped up in the Winter Olympics and the Mavericks-Pacers. Did I miss a Brent Musburger or Bob Knight reference during the Oklahoma-Kansas game to one of college basketball's seminal moments that occurred 25 years ago today? Surely, you remember this:

It was bigger than big north of the border. It was the most-watched sports program in Canadian history. Let me repeat: It was the most-watched sports program in Canadian history. Here's the news release from our Canadian friends:

The entry "USA-Canada Olympic Hockey set Canadian TV record!!!" is tagged: Canada , Winter Olympic Ratings Maybe it's time to load up the truck and head north. What kind of country is this or what? NBC's average viewership figures for Sunday night read thusly: In ratingspeak: Ice Hockey 4.3; Ice Dancing et al: 13.2. You think that would happen in Canada? I will hold my tongue and not advise the NHL to incorporate ice dancing into its games as it has the dastardly shootout. Beside, who would lead Steve Ott or Brenden Morrow?

The entry "Still not good to be a Cowboys fan in Philadelphia" is tagged: Dallas Cowboys , Philadelphia Eagles It was live and in color on cable's MSNBC while NBC was showing taped skiing, skating and ice dancing. I'm not sure why anyone would really complain about the game on cable. MSNBC is available in 92 million homes about 6 million less than ESPN. We all know that hockey is a cable sport. I have Verizon Fios, which means I got to see the game in HD, which many others did not. That's the only knock. On the other hand, the beauty of the MSNBC telecast was the sparsity of commercials. The game felt like a sprint from start to finish. And if you ever had any doubt about the genius of Mike Emrick's play-by-play, I'm sure there can be no doubt this morning.

NBC's coverage of the Vancouver Games scored a 19.8 from in the 8 pm hour in major market overnight ratings for Wednesday. Idol earned a 12.3. Locally, Channel 5's Olympics topped Idol in the 8-9 hour as well. Where is Paula Abdul when you need her? For the night, the Olympics, with its packaged coverage that included Lindsey Vonn's taped gold medal downhill, NBC scored a 19.3 major market rating. On the corresponding night four years ago in Turin, Idol trounced the Olympics -- 17.6 to 10.7.

It's coming Friday and the if he is going to read a statement while not answering questions -- then I have a question. "If you are media member invited to attend to be nothing more than a prop, what does it do for your credibility if you go?" The orchestration of this event reminds of the Masters pulling strings annually in Augusta. Or maybe a Kim Jong-il media event in North Korea.

The Vancouver Olympics are being broadcast live except when they are not. When NBC Sports czar was still a Yalie, he must have gotten some advice from a successful alum: "Package for prime time." Downhill skier Lindsey Vonn, NBC's designated diva of the Winter Games, is scheduled to do her thing soon after her events starts at 1 pm. NBC, however, will delay showing the footage until prime time for maximum exposure. I know a lot of people will be bellyaching about this injustice and similar acts by NBC designed to boost ratings. But does it really matter? How many folks ever hear of Vonn before these Games? Skiing isn't exactly a TV staple. Now we can''t live if e don't see Vonn live. Still, the cries of injustice will be heard across the country. To that, I say, "Chill, it's only the Winter Olympics."
