Mass Layoffs (Monthly)

June 24, 2010
In May, employers took 1,412 mass layoff actions involving 135,789 workers. The number of events decreased by 444 over the month, and associated initial claims decreased by 65,081. Layoffs in the manufacturing sector declined to their lowest levels in program history.

American Time Use Survey

June 22, 2010
In 2009, employed persons worked an average of 7.5 hours on the days that they worked; they worked longer on weekdays (7.9 hours) than on weekend days (5.0 hours). Eighty-five percent of women and 67 percent of men spent some time doing household activities such as housework, cooking, lawn care, or financial and other household management on a given day.

State unemployment rates, May 2010

June 28, 2010
Nevada reported the highest unemployment rate among the states, 14.0 percent in May. This is the first month in which Nevada recorded the highest rate among the states and the first time since April of 2006 that a state other than Michigan has posted the highest rate.
