Just when you thought you'd heard it all

Pardon the headline that doesn't tell you anything about this blog post, but it conveys exactly what I feel about the silly (but comical) story of the NBA trying to force Caron Butler to quit chewing straws during the game. Who cares? Other than Butler? So he'll go back to chewing gum, which I'm sure he did at some point in his past before getting the straw addiction. Let's move on to more important things,...

NBA bans Dallas Mavericks player Caron Butler's straw-chewing

Dallas Mavericks guard Caron Butler can't chew drinking straws during games. "They say it's against the rules,'' Mavs owner Mark Cuban told dallasbasketball.com last night. "That's all I know.'' Butler reportedly has had the habit since his teenage days. "I used to chew on, the little, you know how you pull the tag off your shoestring?" Butler said on Washingtonpost.com. "They said that would chip your tooth, so I just went to this one day....

The Washington Post is reporting that the Washington Wizards have worked out a deal with Zydrunas Ilgauskas and will waive him. The announcement is expected today, and his agent, Herb Rudoy, texted the paper saying that he would probably pick a team to join this weekend. Teh Mavericks are among those interested in the 7-3 center's services. Here are his stats....

What does beating the Lakers mean for Mavericks?

12:30 AM Thu, Feb 25, 2010 |  |
Todd Archer/Reporter    Bio |  E-mail  |  News tips

There was a lot made of what a win against the Lakers would mean for the Mavericks as they get closer to March. To get a win, especially without Caron Butler, who had a reaction to medication he took Tuesday, was a big moment for the Mavs but in the locker room afterward the tone was measured. "I don't think anybody on this team is thinking, 'Man, we beat the Lakers,'" center Brendan Haywood said....

More on Kobe Bryant's miss

I blogged late in the fourth quarter that it felt like this was coming down to a Kobe Bryant moment. You just had that feeling and with 25.9 seconds left, it did. Jay-Z felt it, I'm sure but I wasn't able to get near him or Beyonce after the game. Patrick Crayton, Tony Dorsett and Ken Hamlin, some of the famous inside the packed house, felt it too. But Bryant missed. His 25-footer from the...

Lakers coach Phil Jackson a fan of Mavericks' trade, too

11:59 PM Wed, Feb 24, 2010 |  |
Todd Archer/Reporter    Bio |  E-mail  |  News tips

Count Phil Jackson among the admirers of the Mavericks trade with Washington, but he also believes they have had some good fortune, noting Josh Howard's season-ending knee injury and Erick Dampier's dislocated finger one game after the trade. "I don't want to use the term, 'Get out of jail card,' but those guys coming from Washington, it's great to be on a winning team when you've had a difficult time," Jackson said. While Butler didn't...

Mavericks hold off Lakers; Jason Kidd on scoring tear

Eddie Sefko/Reporter    Bio |  E-mail  |  News tips

In this era of the NBA, there is no more intimidating feeling than seeing Kobe Bryant rising up for a 3-pointer in the final minute. This time, he missed. Bryant's missed 3-pointer with 25 seconds left, which could have tied the game, freed the Mavericks for a 101-96 victory Wednesday night at American Airlines Center. The Mavs were up 97-94 when Bryant missed. Jason Terry, who had a team-high 28 points, hit two free throws...

Kobe Bryant misses in the clutch, who knew?

10:35 PM Wed, Feb 24, 2010 |  |
Todd Archer/Reporter    Bio |  E-mail  |  News tips

Kobe Bryant had a chance to tie it up with 23.7 seconds - or so - to play and just about everybody in the place thought the Lakers star would make it. We mentioned his winner Tuesday in Memphis already, and Phil Jackson talked before the game about Bryant's ability in the clutch. Not so much this time. From the left wing, Bryant's three was long and went out of bounds off Pau Gasol. And...

In-game thread: Mavericks vs. Lakers

Read as Todd Archer and Eddie Sefko take you through the Lakers-Mavericks game Wednesday night. ------------------------------- DeShawn Stevenson starts the night on Kobe Bryant. Interestingly he helped out in the post on Pau Gasol on the first possession but Bryant never got the ball. Stevenson was something of a stopper in his previous stops. He played 23 minutes on Monday against Indiana and had seven points, by far his most playing time since the trade....

D.J. Mbenga back in the house

8:16 PM Wed, Feb 24, 2010 |  |
Eddie Sefko/Reporter    Bio |  E-mail  |  News tips

How good would it look right now if D.J. Mbenga were wearing the Mavericks' uniform instead of the Lakers? Ran into the former Mav in the hallway before the game and he's had a blast being part of the Lakers, winning a ring and playing alongside Kobe Bryant. But I can assure you he's still got a soft spot for the Mavericks and Dallas. And guess what? The big man is a free agent at...

Lots of Lakers fans at Mavericks home arena

8:05 PM Wed, Feb 24, 2010 |  |
Todd Archer/Reporter    Bio |  E-mail  |  News tips

Maybe it's just me and I'm not used to this kind of stuff, but you're seeing a lot of Lakers' fans in the house tonight at American Airlines Center. It's a little like when the Cowboys play an away game and their fans take over the stadium. Lot's of purple and gold and Kobe Bryant jerseys. Matter of fact, I don't see another player's jersey from the Lakers in the sections near me. Bryant's jersey...

Mavericks will be without Caron Butler tonight vs. Lakers

7:07 PM Wed, Feb 24, 2010 |  |
Todd Archer/Reporter    Bio |  E-mail  |  News tips

The Mavericks will be without Caron Butler for tonight's game against Los Angeles for what the team is calling a "reaction to medicine." Butler took the medication Tuesday and did not take part in the morning shootaround. The decision to sit was made only a few moments ago, but owner Mark Cuban said he expects Butler to play Friday at Atlanta. "It's not an ongoing issue," Cuban said. Butler's absence creates a huge void for...

Some of the Mavs' big wins over the Lakers in recent years

12:04 PM Wed, Feb 24, 2010 |  |
Todd Davis/Editor    Bio |  E-mail  |  News tips

The NBA regular season can drag a bit, but some opponents provide a little more bang for the buck or at least leave fans more satisfied with a victory. The Lakers visit Dallas tonight (8 p.m., ESPN), and Kobe Bryant is back, so even if it isn't a great game, there still is plenty to get excited about. Here are some of the Mavericks' more enjoyable victories over the Lakers in the past few years....
