Blotter: Burglary nets $250,000 in copper tubing, coolers

07:16 AM CST on Wednesday, February 24, 2010

By Donna Fielder / Staff Writer

Burglars broke into a closed grocery store over the weekend and carried away an estimated $250,000 worth of property, according to a police report.

A real estate agent told police that he was showing the building to a banker Monday when he noticed that burglars had forced their way into the back of the store in the 600 block of East Sherman Drive.

The intruders defeated the back-door lock and opened the roll-up door so they could drive a vehicle in, according to the police report. They removed eight coolers and cut copper tubing from inside the store. The real estate agent estimated the coolers were worth $100,000 and the copper was worth $150,000.

An investigation is continuing.

Other reports

1500 block of Avenue C — Officers responded about 5:45 a.m. Monday to a call from a man who said his adult son and the son’s friend were fighting.

The officer first encountered one man, who appeared to be intoxicated, according to the report. He said the other man was ‘‘out of control.” When the officer asked him for his driver’s license, he handed over a credit card, the report states. The man was surprised to learn it wasn’t his driver’s license.

He said they were arguing about which of their professions was the best and they started to fight. He said the other man grabbed a handgun and put it to his own head.

The second man said the argument was actually because the first man was taking medications not prescribed to him.

The officer found marijuana and paraphernalia in several places in the two men’s part of the house and some individual prescription pills, the report states. The officer took the first man to jail on charges of possession of a controlled substance and possession of dangerous drugs.

1800 block of McCormick Street — A woman reported Saturday that she is visiting her mother-in-law from out of town because she is the person legally designated to handle her financial affairs.

She has been noticing for some time that the woman’s son, who lives with her, is using his mother’s credit card to pay for Internet access, she said. She has canceled the credit card three times and acquired another account number, but each time the man finds the card and uses it, the report states.

The last time, he used the woman’s bank account routing number to pay for the access, according to the report.

The daughter-in-law said she tried to cancel the man’s account with his Internet service provider but was told she wasn’t allowed to do that by the company because she doesn’t have his password.

15000 block of State Highway 114, Justin area — A man told Denton County sheriff’s deputies that someone stole an 8-foot trailer, a compressor and other items from outside a transportation business.
