The women's figure skating free skate is tonight, and Korea's Kim Yu-Na holds almost a five-point lead over Japan's Mao Asada heading into it. My sense is that Kim is almost untouchable. She had all that pressure on her before the short program, but delivered anyway. She would have to make major mistakes to lose her crown. Joannie Rochette also returns to the ice. She skated Tuesday for her mother, who died suddenly on Sunday....
The defining moment of Canada's rout of powerful Russia in the men's hockey quarterfinals wasn't one of Canada's seven goals, nor was it a pretty pass or a deft move that helped turn a matchup of gold medal favorites into a 7-3 blowout. In fact, it didn't take place until the game had long since been decided. Late in the third period, Canadian defenseman Dan Boyle was going after the puck behind his net when...
DMN photojournalist Gerry McCarthy had another busy day in Vancouver, first covering Team USA's 2-0 victory over Switzerland in ice hockey, then heading over to Pacific Coliseum to shoot short-track speedskating, aka: the demolition derby of the Winter Games. Click here to see Gerry's images from ice hockey quarterfinals and here to see a short-track slideshow....
The stories began arriving in the afternoon, all including some reference to the "rift" or "long-simmering rivalry" between American ski stars Lindsey Vonn and Julia Mancuso. Both have won two medals at these Games -- Vonn a gold and a bronze, Mancuso two silvers -- and neither is shy about self-promotion. They have been competitors since they were kids, each taking a turn as the next great U.S. woman skier. Vonn's turn happened to come...
Of the three American drivers in the women's bobsled competition, two had serious doubts about their ability to negotiate the swift and treacherous course at Whistler Sliding Center. One of them was right. Shauna Rohbock, who called the track "stupid fast," among many other things, and said the designers had gone "overboard," couldn't handle the course well enough to hang with the leaders. The pilot of USA-1, America's top sled, wound up sixth, almost two... February 24, 2010
Just when it seemed like the Russia might be positioning itself to rally against Canada, Brenden Morrow did what he's done his entire career. He scored a gritty goal, one that required personal sacrifice. One that's probably not going to be part of any Team Canada highlight DVD. But it was the goal that snuffed out any hopes of a comeback from a team that boasts NHL stars Alex Ovechkin, Evgeni Malkin and Pavel Datsyuk...
The bad luck continues for Denton short-track speedskater Jordan Malone. Malone was in second place, a few strides from the finish line, about to qualify for the 500 meter quarterfinals...then, boom. Short-track happened. Malone hit a block, skated into the back of Korea's Yoon-Gy Kwak, then went sprawling and sliding into the pads on the side of the rink. As he knelt on the ice, he clasped his hands to his helmet. "Not again," he...
Denton short-track speedskater Jordan Malone skates in about 30 minutes in 500 meter qualifying. Malone has waited 10 days since he was disqualified in his opening heat of the 1,500 meters on Feb. 13. Malone is one of 18 individual skaters to be disqualified in short-track during these Games. It's part of the sport. But it was also frustrating. The 500 isn't Malone's strongest event. If he finishes his heat in the top two, he'll...
Brenden Morrow scored the kind of gritty goal he's been scoring his entire career with the Stars to restore Canada's three-goal lead late in the first period. First, Morrow exerted the energy and effort to establish position in front of net. a Russian defenseman knocked him down, but he didn't stay on his butt for long. Morrow popped up and dug out a puck from behind the net, then he quickly attacked, lifting a backhand...
It would have been so easy for the United States to panic during the second intermission of its quarterfinal game against Switzerland. Heavy favorites, the Americans were tied 0-0. A USA goal had been disallowed in the final seconds of the second period. And the crowd had turned heavily toward the Swiss, in part because there's no way in the world the Canadian congregation at the game was going to cheer for the USA. No... |
