Good morning, North Texas. This morning, I have read your e-mails to the editor and learned that:

-- Many conclude that the shooting at Fort Hood was definitely a terrorist attack and reject the calls not to jump to conclusions.
-- Many don't like the health care bill passed by the House this weekend, but many do. How many each way? I can't really tell because a lot of the e-mails we received were clearly inspired by a call to write mass e-mails.
-- Several are concerned about Afghanistan and a few about Colombia.
-- Lots wrote about sports, and I forwarded these to the sports editor.

Re: "Leading Questions," last Sunday Points.
Richard Gill questions why first lady Michelle Obama does not use commercial airlines to jaunt around the world.
In modern times, no first lady has flown commercial. Michelle Obama and her children's safety is as much a priority as the president's.

John Wayne and torture

Letter to the Editor    E-mail  |  Suggest a blog topic

John Wayne appears in a scene from Part of what I do every day is look up photos in The Dallas Morning News archive to illustrate the letters to the editor -- and Leading Questions.

This week, I was particularly glad to note a questions submitted by Mark Salditch of Dallas -- not because, as some of you expect, I feel I want to get a point across either way. No, I liked Mr. Salditch's question because it gave me an opportunity to use a photo of John Wayne -- and how many chances do you get to do that?

Here's his question and the photo I settled on. Flip to the next part of the blog entry to see the one I (reluctantly) passed up:

Have you ever seen the John Wayne movie where he tortures the Indians who have captured his wife? No? That's because John Wayne embodies American ideals, and Americans don't torture.

A fortune telling store in New York's Eastside. Operation Crystal Ball, a seventh-month-old effort by the New York City Police Department's Special Frauds Squad is trying to address the problem of illegal fortunetelling. While some stores are operating legitimately, the police say scores of others are preying on vulnerable people hungry for psychic solace or metaphysical wisdom.Every week, we ask our readers to send us questions -- rhetorical questions that illuminate or educate, or just plain entertain -- and we publish them with the Sunday letters.

This week, four readers nobly answered the call for Leading Questions. Read on for their queries, and to see why this photo is posted here ...

Pistachio nuts are displayed on March 31, 2009 in Washington,DC. US federal food safety officials said a California plant was recalling at least one million pounds (454 tonnes) of pistachio products following fears of salmonella contamination. The announcement came in the wake of a devastating salmonella outbreak linked to peanut products that has left nine people dead and nearly 700 sick since late last year. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) cautioned consumers to avoid eating pistachios until it had determined the full scope of the contamination and said it was conducting genetic testing of pistachio samples. The food safety agency said it was investigating pistachio products sold by Setton Pistachio of Terra Bella Inc, California, the second-largest pistachio processor in the United States. Our all-knowing Congress bails out AIG and now, all of the sudden, they find out they have some management flaws, some careless spending, and they are going to take it back by force. Why give it in the first place? Could it be that they don't have a clue?
