Edward Albee's "Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?" at Island ETC thru October 17th
George, a disillusioned academic, and Martha, his caustic wife, have just come home from a faculty party. When a handsome young professor and his mousy wife stop by for a nightcap, an innocent night of fun and games quickly turns dark and dangerous. Long-buried resentments are unleashed as George and Martha turn their rapier-sharp wits against each other, using their guests as pawns in their verbal sparring. By night's end, the secrets of both couples are uncovered and the lies they cling to are exposed. Showtimes Thursday thru Saturday at 8pm, and Sunday at 2:30pm.

Galveston's Fall Festivals Fill the October Air
Galveston Island is host to an array of fall festivals the entire month of October. From free events like Movie Nite on the Strand to the Island's largest event, the Lone Star Motorcycle Rally, there is something for everyone.

Galveston Hosts National Night Out Events October 6th
Grab the lawn chairs and break out the potato salad recipes! Neighborhoods across the Island are planning to participate in Galveston's National Night Out! Many neighborhoods will be hosting a variety of special events such as block parties, cookouts, parades, flashlight walks, contests, youth activities and anticrime rallies.

Artist Boat to Paddle Christmas Bay October 10th
Christmas Bay Coastal Preserve is a place for the adventurous as well as the romantic. Hosting the last remaining natural stands of seagrass beds in Galveston Bay, Christmas Bay supports the offshore shrimp fisheries and the recreational fisherman's desire for redfish. Explore one of the most pristine places on Galveston Bay where an unhindered horizon line meets the Gulf of Mexico.

GHF How-To-Series, "How to Repair Your Historic Shutters and Windows," at Salvage Warehouse October 10th
Long-time Island craftsman Kerry Thomas of Old World Craftsman will share his many years of experience by teaching this class on how to maintain and repair historic shutters and windows.

"Colonel" Paddlewheeler to Host Dinner Cruise October 10th
Eat well, dance all night long and enjoy fresh night breezes on an authentic replica of an 1800-style Paddlewheeler around Galveston Offatts Bayou. The Colonel Paddlewheel Boat ride will feature nonstop dancing with a live DJ, a dinner buffet and a full-service cash bar. Boarding will start at 7 p.m., and the boat will sail at 8 p.m. Tickets must be purchased by Thursday before the dinner ride at 1-888-740-7797.

ArtWalk Returns Saturday, October 10th
For over twenty years, the Galveston Arts Center has produced ArtWalk on Saturday nights in the heart of the historic district. Now spreading to other parts of the island, ArtWalk occurs approximately every six weeks in existing commercial galleries, non-profit arts spaces, restaurants and retail shops. One of the Galveston Arts Center's largest programs, ArtWalk promotes visual art and artists, offers alternative places to see and learn about art, and welcomes visitors to the island's flourishing art community.

"Seaside City: Historic Postcards and Paintings from Rosenberg Library" on Display During ArtWalk October 10th
"Seaside City" will feature color postcards and paintings pertaining to Galveston as a maritime city with a focus on ships and boats; harbor and wharf scenes; “King Cotton”; commercial and sport fishing; passenger liners; and pleasure boats.

"Let the Spirit Move You... An Uplifting Arts Experience" at The Grand October 10th
"Let the Spirit Move You... An Uplifting Arts Experience" is the theme for a combined special exhibit of mixed media meditative and spiritual abstracts and inspiring photographic works - hosted by The Grand 1894 Opera House - and all to be presented in conjunction with Galveston's ArtWalk, Saturday, October 10th. This one-night-only exhibition will be presented between 6pm-9pm at The Grand, with spiritual musical entertainment from 6:30pm-7:30pm.

"Sweet Honey in the Rock" at The Grand, October 10th at 8pm
Grammy Award-winning a cappella ensemble Sweet Honey in the Rock brings their stunning vocal prowess to Galveston's Grand 1894 Opera House on Saturday, October 10, at 8 pm. Sponsored in part by Texas Commission on the Arts, this African American ensemble seamlessly blends lyrics, spirited movement and stirring stories by capturing the complex sounds of Blues, spirituals, and jazz improvisation.

This 1,200-acre state park hosts many examples of barrier island habitats explored easily from the beach or by walking trails.

The Grand's "Serious Fun" Continues with "Peter and the Wolf," October 15th
The Grand 1894 Opera House's Serious Fun performing arts season begins Thursday, October 15, at 10 am with Childsplay's production of "Peter and the Wolf." Children of all ages will enjoy this exciting new take on an old favorite; it provides a delightful introduction to theatre and classical orchestration for the youngest of audiences as Prokofiev's tale gets an exciting new riff.

Cherryholmes at The Grand, October 16th at 8pm
Cherryholmes hits the stage on Friday, October 16, bringing their hard-driving instrumental virtuosity and explosive vocal harmonies to The Grand 1894 Opera House at 8 pm. They’ve conquered Branson and Dollywood, bringing crowds to their feet at every performance, driving it hard and serving it straight up. With their fluidity of instrumental movement and dance, it's a look and sound that can only be described as Cherryholmes.

Exploration of the five-mile jetty entering the Gulf of Mexico makes your day complete from beach to bay.

Galveston Appreciation Day Coming to Moody Gardens October 18th
Galvestonians are invited to become tourists in their own town and visit Moody Gardens on Galveston Appreciation Day, Sunday, October 18th. Current Galveston residents, employees who work on the island and their immediate families will receive a free Day Pass that entitles them to one entrance to Moody Gardens attractions: Aquarium Pyramid, IMAX 3D theater, 4D Special FX Theater, Ridefilm Theater and the Colonel Paddlewheel Boat.

The Grand's "Serious Fun" Continues with "The Most Valuable Player," October 20th
The Grand 1894 Opera House's Serious Fun performing arts season continues Tuesday, October 20, at 10 am with "The Most Valuable Player." Children of all ages will enjoy the dramatic and touching chronicle of Jackie Robinson, one of America's most inspirational heroes. This moving play from Dallas Children's Theater chronicles the events that shaped Robinson's character and the tremendous obstacles he overcame, changing the face of our national pastime, and ultimately our nation as well.

Island Oktoberfest Oompahs Back to Isle Friday, October 23rd
Historic downtown Galveston will again come alive the last full weekend of October when the 28th annual Island Oktoberfest kicks off Friday evening, October 23rd from 5pm - 11pm.

D'Feet Breast Cancer Runs / Walks Jog to Moody Gardens October 24th
Join Galveston.com & Company in supporting (and participating in) the 9th Annual D'Feet Breast Cancer Run / Walk, coming to Moody Gardens Saturday, October 24th. Island Oktoberfest Celebrates Re-Birth Saturday, October 24th
Oktoberfest continues Saturday, October 24th, from 11am-7pm. The event will feature good music, great food and drink including smoked sausage, bratwurst, and knockwurst. Beverages will include a variety of German-style beer and wines. Superb entertainment will again be provided by the internationally-acclaimed Alpenfest Band.

GHF How-To-Series, "How to Clean and Maintain Cemetery Monuments," at Broadway Cemetery October 24th
GHF’s Preservation Resource Center Coordinator Matt Farragher will teach this class on how to properly clean headstones and monuments without using harsh, potentially damaging materials. The class is valuable for church or service groups that maintain cemeteries or for individuals interested in learning how to better care for their neighborhood or family monuments. The class will also include a short tour of Galveston’s historic Broadway Cemetery complex.

"The Wonder Bread Years" Comes to The Grand October 24th at 8pm
Finally, a show for the late-generation baby boomer in all of us! "The Wonder Bread Years," written by and starring "Seinfel"d writer Pat Hazell, invites you to take a rollicking field trip to your childhood at The Grand 1894 Opera House on Saturday, October 24 at 8 pm. "The Wonder Bread Years" is a fast-paced, hilarious production that gracefully walks the line between stand-up and theater.

Galveston Pride Festival at Saengerfest Park October 24th
The 2009 Galveston Pride Festival will be held Saturday, October 24th, at Saengerfest Park. Featured will be singer Tiffany. Admission is free, and the event will feature live entertainment, food, and more.
