I wrote my first book, Inside Out: Becoming My Own Man in 1980 because there was a great deal of discussion about what women needed, but very little about men. I began the book with these words:
I remember when I was about three years old, riding on my dad’s shoulders while he walked through a park in Encino, California. I was wildly happy, sitting on the top of the world watching the blue skys and billowy white clouds.
Endless miles of citrus orchards spread out in all directions around the park. Dad seemed free and without cares, occasionally whistling a lullaby and throwing peanuts to the pigeons.
Mom was home doing typing for one of the soon-to-be blacklisted novelists. No one ever told me but I knew that the reason she worked was because Dad wasn’t making any money, although he tried desperately hard to sell his stories to the emerging television industry in the Hollywood of the 40’s.
