Who cares about the Pro Bowl

11:01 AM Tue, Jan 26, 2010 |
Jean-Jacques Taylor/Columnist   E-mail   News tips

The Cowboys have nine players in Sunday's Pro Bowl.
Does anyone care?
This has nothing to do with the players in the game. Miles Austin earned his trip to the Pro Bowl. So did Jay Ratliff. And Jason Witten.
All of the players did.
The bigger question is whether anyone cares about the Pro Bowl. It's the worst all-star game among the major sports.
Baseball is the best, without doubt, because the exhibition game is played virtually the same way a regular-season game is played. That's not the case with the Pro Bowl.
You can't blitz. You can't run the 3-4 defense. You can't do a thousand other things that we see in every NFL game.
And we haven't even discussed the fact that the best players won't even be playing in the game because all of the Saints and Colts who were named to the Pro Bowl will be playing in the Super Bowl.
Can you really get that excited when six or seven quarterbacks have Pro Bowl attached to their name because of injuries and withdrawals? I don't think so.
Even when that's not the case, many of the best players beg out of the game. They're not interested in playing one more game or getting hurt. Who can blame them?
The game is too hard, too physical and too tough to go less than full-speed, but the guys in the Pro Bowl spend half of the game protecting themselves.
That's why I won't be watching just like I haven't watched for the last decade.

Tony Romo never had a chance to match future Hall of Famer Brett Favre

5:46 PM Sun, Jan 17, 2010 |
Jean-Jacques Taylor/Columnist   E-mail   News tips

The ultimate humiliation occurred on the final play of the first half: The Cowboys couldn't even protect Tony Romo long enough to throw a Hail Mary.

Romo eluded defenders for several seconds before Ray Edwards finally dropped him for a 16-yard loss.

Ridiculous.

This is not the day to bury Tony Romo, though many of you will. Don't blame him for the 34-3 beatdown the Cowboys' received Sunday.

The Cowboys' offensive line in general - right tackle Marc Colombo in particular - gave him no chance. Jason Garrett's play-selection didn't help that much either.

Hit any quarterback hard enough and long enough and he will succumb whether it's Romo, Troy Aikman or Roger Staubach.

Wade Phillips has done a terrific job this season

11:53 PM Sat, Jan 09, 2010 |
Jean-Jacques Taylor/Columnist   E-mail   News tips

Winning record after Dec. 1? Check. NFC East title? Check.

End wretched streak of 12 consecutive seasons without playoff win by smacking the hated Philadelphia Eagles? Check.

I'm not really sure what else Wade Phillips must do to get Jerry Jones to sign off on the team option that officially makes him the coach in 2010. Actually, Phillips' performance this season should earn him the same three-year deal with a club option he received when he arrived, though it should include a fat raise.

Phillips has earned it.

Especially after the Cowboys whipped Philadelphia, 34-14, Saturday night at Cowboys Stadium.

Dallas 27-7: Impressions of the first half

8:28 PM Sat, Jan 09, 2010 |
Jean-Jacques Taylor/Columnist   E-mail   News tips

You watch the first half and there's no doubt - even before the last touchdown to Miles Austin - that Dallas was the better team. The only question is whether they would stop committing enough offensive penalties to seize control of the game.

Once they did, it was really no contest.

The Cowboys controlled both sides of the line of scrimmage and gave up one fluky big play for a TD.

* The first quarter was full of wasted opportunities. Dallas had a first down at the Philly 14 and has to punt after a series of mishaps.

Then a nifty punt return by Patrick Crayton set the Cowboys up at their own 49. That drive also ended with a punt after Dallas failed to convert on 3-and-15 from the Philly 34.

Dallas had outgained Philly 104-12, but the score was 0-0. The old Cowboys - like those in 2007 - would've panicked and found a way to let Philly stay in the game into the second half.

These Cowboys regrouped and then opened up a can.

These Cowboys prove they're different

8:38 PM Sun, Jan 03, 2010 |
Jean-Jacques Taylor/Columnist   E-mail   News tips

The talk about December failures is over. Kaput. Finis. Never to be mentioned - for at least five years.

These Cowboys insisted to anyone who would listen that they were different breed. Now, they've proved it.

First with the shocking win over New Orleans in the Bayou a couple of weeks ago. Then on Sunday afternoon with a resounding win over Philadelphia, winners of six straight and the NFC's hottest team.

Dallas 24. Philly 0.

Back-to-back shutouts to end the season. NFC East champs.

Wow.

No way, I'd have guessed that when training camp began. Or when the Cowboys were losing to the New York Giants in Week 2. And certainly not after this team dropped its first two games in December.

If you're honest, you didn't either. Not really. Not enough to bet your mortgage in Vegas on it, so don't go there.

Dallas 17-0: Impressions of the first half

4:25 PM Sun, Jan 03, 2010 |
Jean-Jacques Taylor/Columnist   E-mail   News tips

This is the second best half of football the Cowboys have played this season, trumped only by their amazing first half against New Orleans a couple of weeks ago.

The Cowboys have not allowed a touchdown in six quarters and their offense was dynamic, totaling nearly 300 yards and getting every key offensive player involved. Tony Romo was outstanding, the offensive line was even better and Miles Austin and Patrick Crayton were playmakers.

The defense gave up some big plays, who doesn't to the Eagles, but they forced a key turnover and made a key third-down stop to keep them scoreless.

* Wade Phillips made a really nice call on the first third down of the game. He dialed up a blitz using Bradie James, who hasn;t blitzed much this year, and the result was a sack.

That's called a tone-setter./

Wade Phillips' defense turns in dominating performance

11:52 PM Sun, Dec 27, 2009 |
Jean-Jacques Taylor/Columnist   E-mail   News tips

The best move Jerry Jones made this off-season wasn't getting rid of Terrell Owens or making sure the offense was Romo friendly.

It was making Wade Phillips accountable for the defense.

You'd be amazed the good things that usually happen, when you make folks accountable because it forces them to perform.

Either they get the job done. Or they don't.

No excuses. No alibis.

And no one to blame like last season, when we were never really sure whether former defensive coordinator Brian Stewart made the defensive calls - or just the ones that didn't work.

No more.

Tony Romo is throwing the ball more to Miles Austin than he did T.O.

6:04 PM Tue, Dec 22, 2009 |
Jean-Jacques Taylor/Columnist   E-mail   News tips

We often criticized T.O. for whining about not getting the ball enough. And we criticized Tony Romo for throwing the ball to T.O. too much, and Jason Garrett for calling plays that seemingly forced the ball to T.O.

Guess what?

The Cowboys have been throwing the ball more to Miles Austin than they threw it to T.O. last year since the Denver game in Week 4.

But no one complained about the number of times Austin gets targeted each game.

Interesting.

In the last 11 games, Romo is throwing Austin 9.2 passes per game. You can't really count the first three games since Austin received limited playing time in those games. Four times, Romo has targeted him 10 times or more in a game.

In 2008, T.O. received 8.8 targets per game. Four times, he had at least 10 passes directed toward him.

Austin is producing more than T.O. did last year.

Austin has 1,138 yards receiving and 11 touchdowns. Austin has five 100-yard games. Only Andre Johnson and Vincent Jackson - each has six - have more.

No one complains, though, because Austin is forever crediting for any success he has to his teammates and coaching staff. And when he doesn't get the ball, he doesn't pitch a fit or complain about the lack of opportunities.

What a novel concept.

Too bad T.O. never figured that out.

Who dat undefeated? It ain't the Saints

Jean-Jacques Taylor/Columnist   E-mail   News tips

NEW ORLEANS - Mr. Fix It, as Wade Phillips occasionally refers to himself, delivered his finest performance as the Cowboys' defensive mastermind Saturday night.

It was trumped only by his performance as a head coach.
Wade Phillips' defense and his team turned in their most complete performance since a 2007 win over Green Bay essentially clinched the top seed in the NFC .

Who dat no longer undefeated?

The New Orleans Saints after the Cowboys delivered a thorough 24-17 beatdown in what's supposed to be one of the NFL's loudest, toughest venues.

Whatever.

Dallas 17-3: impressions of the first half

8:34 PM Sat, Dec 19, 2009 |
Jean-Jacques Taylor/Columnist   E-mail   News tips

Fantastic first half performance by the Cowboys.

Who dey?

Who dey wearing the Cowboys' jerseys. Admit it, you probably haven't seen the Cowboys play with that type of precision and passion and execution since they beat GreenBay to go 12-1 in 2007.

They're defense was terriffic. The offense was explosive. The special teams were outstanding. Now, they can do it for another half.

After all, the Saints have trailed by 24-3, 14-0 and 30-20 this season and come back to win.

* DeMarcus Ware didn't start, but played only on third downs. It does raise the question that if he's good enough to play third down, why not first and second? Is it s stamina question? It'll be interesting to see if he plays more in the second half as each plays becomes a little more important.

He made a huge play at the end of the first half with a sack and a forced fumble that gave Dallas an opportunity to score more points in the final minute of the first half. Don't forget, Dallas gets the ball to start the second half.

Wade Phillips has made a fiasco of the Cowboys' kicking situation

1:51 PM Wed, Dec 16, 2009 |
Jean-Jacques Taylor/Columnist   E-mail   News tips

The arcane way Wade Phillips has handled the Cowboys' kicking situation is a microcosm of his three-season tenure with the team and shows why he's much better suited to be a defensive coordinator than a head coach.

The best coaches make decisions or put action plans into place before a crisis occurs.

Not Phillips.

It starts with his philosophical approach to building a football team. Once training camp concludes and Phillips selects his 53-man roster, he's loathe to make changes, which is absurd.

Phillips believes players bond and become a family during training camp, and he doesn't want to disrupt that. In the process, he creates a situation where players realize their jobs are never ever in jeopardy.

Last year, the scouting department begged Phillips to bring in Junior Siavii for a workout just to motivate overrated Tank Johnson.

Phillips refused.

See, there's no pressure to perform on this team. No tension. There's no one on the bottom of the roster worrying that a week or two of bad practices or performances will lead to unemployment.

It's time for Jerry Jones to finally change his ways

1:45 PM Wed, Dec 16, 2009 |
Jean-Jacques Taylor/Columnist   E-mail   News tips

If the Cowboys end this season just like the last 12 seasons have ended, then it's time for Jerry Jones to admit his way isn't working.

Then he must make some changes.

He can start by firing the coach and giving the new coach the same amount of control he gave Bill Parcells.

It's the only way this franchise can return to the glory days because as long as Jerry remains the face of the franchise the coach will never have the autonomy he needs to succeed.

Jerry had the right idea when he hired Parcells and essentially let him run the franchise. That's how he ended up with a 13-3 record and the No.1 seed in the NFC, even though Wade Phillips coached the team.

The problem isn't that Parcells left, it's that Jerry let all of the infrastructure leave with him.

This team needs leadership and discipline and accountability. The only way it can get it is for Jerry to move back into the shadows and let someone else be the face of the franchise.

To do so, Jerry must humble himself and accept the truth. No other good owner would let a GM, who hasn't won a playoff game in 13 seasons survive.

There's no question Jerry wants to win. But does he want it badly enough to change his ways?

We're about to find out.

Cowboys collection of faux stars lose another December game

8:30 PM Sun, Dec 13, 2009 |
Jean-Jacques Taylor/Columnist   E-mail   News tips

ARLINGTON - These Cowboys desperately want you to believe they've changed.

They want you to believe their raggedy record after Dec. 1 is a figment of your imagination or a media-created conspiracy.

Poppycock.

These Cowboys are what we thought they were: a collection of faux stars who consistently find ways to lose instead of win in the season's most important month.
Once again, they proved it.

Did you really think the Cowboys were going to beat San Diego, winners of their last seven games and owners of a 15-game winning regular-season winning streak after Dec. 1?

C'mon people, you've got to deal in reality - not what you want reality to be.

San Diego 20, Dallas 17.

Now, that's reality.

So is the Cowboys' 3-7 record in December under Wade Phillips.

San Diego 10-3: Impressions of the first half

4:18 PM Sun, Dec 13, 2009 |
Jean-Jacques Taylor/Columnist   E-mail   News tips

Three times Marion Barber from the one and he couldn't get it in the end zone. Three times, the NFL's biggest offensive line couldn't create a lane for Barber.

I don't blame Jason Garrett. I blame the players.

They had a job to do and they failed.

Period.

If the Cowboys lose this game, we'll look back on that series as the one probably turned the game.

Yes, Terence Newman intercepted a pass, but they blew the 41-yard FG. Besides, the psychological damage has already been done.

* It's getting to the point where it might be time to cut Nick Folk. The problem, of course, is there aren't many good kickers onthe street.

If there were, they'd have jobs.

The other problem is that we've seen Folk make clutch kicks. We know he reacts well under pressure - at lease he did his first two seasons in the league.

You don't want to cut him and watch him find a rhythm with another team for the next 10 years.

But the Cowboys aren't good enough to watch him miss kick after kick after kick and win games.

It's obvious his confidence is shot. Can the Cowboys wait for him to get it back?
