It's wise to buy a generator, because it's a fact we are going to lose our electricity which can be caused by many reasons besides weather. At least if you have a generator you can keep from losing your expensive food items. Also, a fireplace is a blessing in times of bad weather. In the ice storm of 2000? That convinced me, and I was luckier than some having a gas hot water heater, and a gas stove. Owning an all electric home can be a huge mistake according to my In-laws. I had a huge water bill that year, but it was worth it for the hot showers we were all able to take.
