About This Blog
This blog was the first in the nation created by an editorial board to give readers a behind-the-scenes view of the discussion that goes into crafting the newspaper’s daily editorials. It includes updates on the work of the editorial staff and debates on general news issues. We welcome and read all letters from readers. Letters are selected for publication based on their clarity and brevity. They also are chosen to represent a diverse set of views on as many issues as possible. February 2010

Part of what I do every day is look up photos in The Dallas Morning News archive to illustrate the letters to the editor -- and Leading Questions. This week, I was particularly glad to note a questions submitted by Mark Salditch of Dallas -- not because, as some of you expect, I feel I want to get a point across either way. No, I liked Mr. Salditch's question because it gave me an opportunity to use a photo of John Wayne -- and how many chances do you get to do that? Here's his question and the photo I settled on. Flip to the next part of the blog entry to see the one I (reluctantly) passed up: Have you ever seen the John Wayne movie where he tortures the Indians who have captured his wife? No? That's because John Wayne embodies American ideals, and Americans don't torture.
