Girls Basketball: Timberview vs. Stephenville moved to Wednesday

10:32 AM Tue, Feb 23, 2010 |  |
Jason Zimmerman/Editor    Bio |  E-mail  |  News tips

The Class 4A Region I quarterfinal game between Mansfield Timberview and Stephenville has been moved to Wednesday due to potential bad weather Tuesday night. The game will still be at Aledo High School and will start at either 6 p.m. (if it is part of a double-header) or 6:30 p.m....

Duncanville-MacArthur Part 3: The winner is ...

Matt Wixon/Reporter    Bio |  E-mail  |  News tips

The Duncanville and Irving MacArthur girls play tonight at 6 p.m. at Arlington Lamar for a spot in the 5A Region I tournmanent this weekend. So what does Duncanville have to do to get past the district rival that handed it two of its three losses this season? Well, Duncanville (33-3) will have to do a lot because MacArthur (35-1) is an excellent team. But here's one big thing: The Panthers will have to play...

Basketball player with artificial limb inspires

I came across an interesting story from the San Jose Mercury News about basketball player Derek Norris: Statistics -- seven points, two rebounds and one assist this season -- fail to tell the story of Gunderson junior Derek Norris. Those numbers can't measure the heart of the 17-year-old basketball player, who had his right leg amputated above the knee at age 6.Regardless of ability, it shows just how much a sport can mean to a...

Waxahachie girls look to extend postseason run

8:13 PM Mon, Feb 22, 2010 |  |
Mark Dent/Reporter    E-mail  |  News tips

The Indians have given the area one of the best stories of the playoffs so far. They defeated top-seed West Mesquite and then stomped Marshall. It's a beautiful ride, one set in motion by players like Brittanya Sterns,* Shaquille Davis and Chanel Miller. *Sterns had Christian Laettner, circa 1992, numbers in her two games last week, shooting 19-of-20 for the field.** **And really, this whole Waxahachie team seems comparable with NCAA Tournament greats. Last Tuesday,...

Private and public: the best district in each for girls basketball

8:01 PM Mon, Feb 22, 2010 |  |
Mark Dent/Reporter    E-mail  |  News tips

We'll start with what we know. The best district in girls basketball is District 7-5A. It has Cedar Hill, Irving MacArthur and Duncanville, you know, three of the top five teams in the state. It has Odyssey Sims, Alexis Jones and Diara Moore, you know, three of the top players in the state. This district, though, has an equally potent peer on the private side. TAPPS 1-5A can boast of equal basketball excellence. Take a...

Boys basketball: Area 4A teams have no chance?

4:55 PM Mon, Feb 22, 2010 |  |
Damon L. Sayles/Contributor    E-mail  |  News tips

I was speaking with a colleague of mine (I'll leave him anonymous) during the Dallas ISD Postseason Classic at Ellis Davis Field House, and he said something that caught my attention. "You know, no team in the area has a shot," he said with confidence and a little arrogance. "Jack Yates High School is going to win state in 4A -- easily." Pretty strong words from a guy who actually grew up in Dallas. His...

Mesquite Poteet football coach Charles Hesse reassigned

4:37 PM Mon, Feb 22, 2010 |  |
Brandon George/Reporter    Bio |  E-mail  |  News tips

Mesquite Poteet football coach Charles Hesse has been reassigned to another position within the Mesquite ISD and the search for the school's next head coach is underway, Mesquite ISD athletic director Steve Bragg said Monday. Poteet finished 0-10 in 2009 and was 1-19 the last two seasons under Hesse. Bragg said Hesse was reassigned to another position at the end of January. Hesse had been Poteet's head coach since 2003 and went 27-44 in seven...

Euless Trinity tight end Chris Barnett commits to Oklahoma

4:11 PM Mon, Feb 22, 2010 |  |
Rainer Sabin/Reporter    Bio |  E-mail  |  News tips

Family dinners are about to become more interesting in one local household. Over the weekend, Euless Trinity's Chris Barnett, a 6-6, 245-pound tight end, committed to Oklahoma. It was an interesting choice, considering that Barnett's brother, Eryon, was a freshman defensive back at Texas this past season. Barnett, who transferred to Trinity in January, made 14 receptions for 129 yards and two touchdowns while playing last season at A. Maceo Smith, where his father, Elzie,...

Arlington Lamar football coaching opening won't be open long

3:41 PM Mon, Feb 22, 2010 |  |
Brandon George/Reporter    Bio |  E-mail  |  News tips

The application deadline to apply for the Arlington Lamar football coaching position is Tuesday. The job opening will officially close Tuesday, Arlington ISD athletic director I.C. Little said Monday. Little said that Lamar principal Jeff Provence and the Lamar football coach search committee will primarily handle the hiring of the new coach who will replace legendary Eddy Peach, who recently resigned. Peach's last day on the job is Friday, Little said. Little said he'll go...

New home for Brittany Barnhill

3:29 PM Mon, Feb 22, 2010 |  |
Greg Riddle/Editor    E-mail  |  News tips

Former Justin Northwest softball standout Brittany Barnhill, who set a state record for career strikeouts in high school, is now pitching in the SEC for Mississippi after playing her first two years of college at Texas. The junior, who was a first-team all-Big 12 selection for UT last season, is 2-1 with a 3.20 ERA for Ole Miss (6-4). She pitched a two-hit shutout, striking out nine, in Friday's 3-0 win over Pittsburgh. Former Keller...

What will be the best girls basketball matchup?

2:47 PM Mon, Feb 22, 2010 |  |
Greg Riddle/Editor    E-mail  |  News tips

The UIL girls basketball state tournament isn't until March 4-6, but there will be some great matchups in this week's regional quarterfinals, regional semifinals and regional finals. Which one do you think will be the best? In 5A Region I, Irving MacArthur -- ranked No. 3 in the state -- plays Duncanville (tied for No. 4 in the state rankings) in a regional quarterfinal Tuesday. The winner of that game could play defending 5A state...

Arlington school trustees honor Arlington Lamar's Peach

2:46 PM Mon, Feb 22, 2010 |  |
Brandon George/Reporter    Bio |  E-mail  |  News tips

Arlington school trustees paid tribute to Arlington Lamar football coach Eddy Peach at their meeting Thursday night. Peach recently announced he was retiring after 40 years at Lamar High School. The board recognized Peach as a role model of coaching and mentoring and passed a resolution honoring him for his commitment to Lamar and its students since the school opened in 1970. Peach is very humble and not one to call attention to himself. But...

Jesuit's shutout streak ends, but record remains perfect

2:43 PM Mon, Feb 22, 2010 |  |
Rainer Sabin/Reporter    Bio |  E-mail  |  News tips

All season long, Jesuit had held the opposition scoreless. For 10 games, not one player had beaten goalkeeper Ryan Aubrey. Then, last Wednesday, Plano not only scored once, but twice. Jesuit would eventually prevail 3-2, keeping its record unblemished. But the shutout streak had ended. "To be honest, I am glad to get it out of the way," Rangers coach Charles DeLong said. This season, Jesuit (12-0), the top-ranked team in ESPN Rise's national soccer...

Former Lincoln standout Hayden wins Big 12 honor at Baylor

2:36 PM Mon, Feb 22, 2010 |  |
Brandon George/Reporter    Bio |  E-mail  |  News tips

Baylor freshman guard Kimetria Hayden, the former Lincoln standout, was named co-Phillips 66 Big 12 Women's Basketball Player of the Week this week by a media voting panel for games played from Feb. 15-21. Hayden poured in a career-high 27 points to lead No. 18 Baylor to a victory over No. 17 Oklahoma State in her first career start last Saturday. She was 9-of-13 (.682) from the floor, including 4-of-7 (.571) from 3-point range and...

I see the state's No. 1 team going down. What do you think?

2:26 PM Mon, Feb 22, 2010 |  |
Greg Riddle/Editor    E-mail  |  News tips

The Houston Cy-Fair girls basketball team is ranked No. 1 in the state in Class 5A and is led by the nation's consensus No. 1 recruit -- 6-3 Chiney Ogwumike, who has signed with Stanford. But I think you're going to see an upset this weekend and that Skyline will beat Cy-Fair (28-1) in the 5A Region II semifinals at Baylor. Readers, do you agree? Skyline (30-2), ranked No. 2 in the state, has won...
