Editorial: Balance Texas budget on 3-legged stool
The list of cuts that rolled out of state agencies last week aren't nearly enough to balance Texas' budget. We must find savings elsewhere. As legislative committees work on this problem before the next session starts, here's a strategy to pursue.

Editorial: Obama's nuclear option
At last, a nuclear energy breakthrough. It's impossible to overestimate the importance of President Barack Obama's plan to finance the construction of two nuclear reactors, the nation's first in three decades.

Editorial: Clock is ticking on DA Watkins' constable probe
As Dallas County District Attorney Craig Watkins is quick to point out, if anyone is going to investigate allegations that county constables broke the law, it's going to be him. Now that he has Danny Defenbaugh's road map, it's time to go to work.

Editorial: Clean air vs. jobs is a false choice
In the heat of an election primary, Gov. Rick Perry's decision to sue the Environmental Protection Agency may seem like smart politics, but it's also bad policy. Even if it buttresses a campaign theme, his approach is troublingly shortsighted.

Editorial: Our recommendations in 2010 primaries
With early voting starting Tuesday, here are the recommendations for the Republican and Democratic primaries we've published so far. Still to come are our picks in five more races, leading to Election Day on March 2.

Editorial: No heroism in Austin suicide attack
As America's polarization grows, people on the extreme fringes probably will use increasingly bizarre acts of lunacy to make their voices – or the voices inside their heads – heard. Andrew Joseph Stack III clearly falls into that category.

Editorial: Hits and Misses
Thoughtful commentary disguised as snap judgments on a jump-start for a streetcar line, a little luck for a lottery winner and a dumb protest idea in Irving.

Editorial: Bleak transportation picture
Imagine the North Texas highway system 20 years from now if Austin fails to deliver more money to keep traffic congestion from getting worse. Here's a sample of what might be pulled off the drawing board.

Editorial: We recommend Garcia in commissioner primary
During an eight-year stint on the Dallas City Council, Elba Garcia proved to be an effective consensus builder who earned the respect of constituents and colleagues. After a tumultuous year, the Dallas County Commissioners Court could use her help.

Editorial: We recommend Sessions in Dist. 32 primary
We don't agree with him on everything, but U.S. Rep. Pete Sessions is the best candidate in the GOP primary for this Dallas district. And he is far more ready than challenger David Smith, who – get this – believes Washington should be more polarized.

Editorial: Taxpayers deserve to know why UNT president quit
We still don't know exactly what led UNT President Gretchen Bataille to abruptly resign after a routine meeting with Chancellor Lee Jackson. We do know this: Texas taxpayers fund much of UNT's freight, and they deserve a clearer explanation.

Editorial: We recommend Jenkins for Dallas County judge
More than three years after ascending to Dallas County's top post, Jim Foster still seems to have a tenuous grasp on the intricacies of important issues. Fortunately, Democratic voters will find a strong alternative in Clay Jenkins

Editorial: Before you vote, be sure you know all you can
As early voting ramps up this week leading to the March 2 Republican and Democratic primaries, we've learned a few things about Texas gubernatorial candidates Debra Medina and Farouk Shami. So all we ask is that you cast an informed vote.

Editorial: We recommend Burgess in 26th District
Michael Burgess has a GOP primary opponent for the first time since 2002. His current challenger, stay-at-home dad James Herford of Keller, fails to make a case for unseating the four-term 26th Congressional District incumbent.

Editorial: We recommend Hall in 4th Congressional District
The 4th Congressional District needs a new voice in Washington, but the five GOP challengers to incumbent Ralph Hall do not provide credible alternatives. So, despite substantial reservations, we recommend Hall in this GOP primary.
